LOWELL — Two Presque Isle County men were killed when the plane they were in crashed into a self-storage unit complex in Lowell on Monday afternoon.

According to a press release from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, Kevin Lawrence, 62, of Presque Isle, and Paul Schalk, 68, of Rogers City, died as a result of the crash that is now under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration, National Transportation Safety Board and Kent County Sheriff’s Department.

The small aircraft had departed from Alpena and was going through the Grand Rapids area when it crashed into the storage facility. The storage business was heavily damaged from the crash and the fire caused from the wreck.
