ALPENA — Thunder Bay Community Health Service Inc. (TBCHS) and Bay Athletic Club (BAC) have announced that construction on 200 W. Chisholm Street has officially begun, according to a TBCHS press release.
The press release states that the building has been used as a bank and auto dealership. The building will undergo a five-month renovation led by First Contracting Inc. Once the renovation is complete, the building will house BAC and new administrative offices for TBCHS.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Monday, and included team members from BAC and TBCHS, according to the press release. Bay Athletic Club CEO Trina Gray has worked with architects to design an open-floor plan health club that will feature a cardio theater, strength training, live and virtual group exercise studio, and a juice bar.
“We are building the next chapter of BAC for our community. We are excited to relocate to the buzzing and vibrant downtown,” Gray said in the press release. “The ground breaking event showcased the energy and excitement of our entire team and the strength of our collaboration with TBCHS and our DDA. I am grateful to (MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena) for two decades of working together and appreciate the hospital’s support in our move.”
Bay Athletic Club is currently located in the HealthPlex wing of MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena.

According to the press release, as a Federally Qualified Health Center, TBCHS supports the community through a variety of healthcare services. TBCHS also aims to improve wellness in Northeast Michigan.
“This collaboration with BAC brings that mission to life,” TBCHS CFO Douglas Kreis said. “Imagine next year, in the heart of winter, driving through downtown and seeing a glowing, vibrant space filled with people moving, connecting, and investing in their health.”
The press release states that the project is expected to stimulate Alpena’s downtown economy. For example, the press release explains that BAC’s downtown Bay Urban Fitness location has drawn post-class foot traffic to surrounding restaurants, cafes, and shops.
