ONAWAY — A standout moment in this year’s Onaway Fourth of July Parade came with the unveiling of a truly unforgettable float, designed and presented by Moran Iron Works in collaboration with the Industrial Arts Institute and two regionally acclaimed mural artists. Now on permanent display at the corner of State and Main Streets, the massive steel mural wall stands as a vibrant symbol of Onaway’s creativity, talent, and hometown pride.
The project began as a vision of community engagement.
“This year’s July Fourth entry was originally conceived as a graffiti wall, with groups of participants — young and old — creating art in real time during the parade,” said Tom Moran, project leader and instructor at the Industrial Arts Institute. “On second thought, we decided to better control the first edition and commissioned two of the best mural artists in our region to create something lasting and unique for Onaway.”
A Wall with a Message
Measuring 20 feet long, 8 feet tall, and weighing over 5,000 pounds, the float combined industrial fabrication with fine art. The structure was welded and assembled by students from IAI’s graduating class under Moran’s direction, including the ornate flairs that frame the mural wall–highlighting the critical role of skilled trades in public art and community impact.

Meet the Artists
Melissa J. McCavitt is a self-taught artist with deep roots in Northern Michigan. McCavitt’s mural, “Conserving Heritage Is Key,” is a bold, thought-provoking piece that weaves together elements of nature and architectural history. With rich textures and vibrant color, it calls attention to the importance of preserving both our natural environment and our built heritage.
“The mural invites viewers to reflect on their role in protecting the legacy we inherit and the world we leave behind,” said McCavitt.
Krista Allerding, a homeschooling mother of seven and lifelong creative, brings joy and whimsy to the wall with her mural, “A Splash of Color.” Inspired by Northern Michigan’s landscapes and her family’s artistic legacy, the mural is a celebration of freedom, beauty, and the everyday moments that make this region special.
“It’s meant to be just that — a splash of color to bring joy all year round,” said Allerding.
Now a Permanent Feature
Following its parade debut, the float has been permanently installed in downtown Onaway at the corner of State and Main Street. The piece serves not only as a testament to the talents of local artists and tradespeople, but also as a long-term reminder of what happens when a community comes together to build something beautiful.
