Michigan DNR announces PlayCleanGo Awareness Week

ALPENA — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced the partnership between the Michigan Invasive Species Program and the North American Invasive Species Management Association to promote PlayCleanGo Awareness Week, which takes place today through June 14.

According to the DNR press release, the annual event aims to educate the public as to how they can stop the spread of invasive species while enjoying outdoor activities.

“Nearly 50% of endangered or threatened fish, wildlife and plants are at risk due to invasive species, which people unintentionally spread with their boots, tires, boats, firewood, pets and more,” Joanne Foreman, DNR Invasive Species Program communications specialist, said in the press release. “But the good news is, by taking a few easy steps, everyone spending time in nature can be part of the solution.”

The press release states that adopting “PlayCleanGo” habits can help prevent the spread of invasive species on land and in the water. The DNR explains that “Play,” describes the enjoyment of outdoor activities; “Clean,” reminds outdoor enthusiasts to remove dirt and debris from shoes, gear, and vehicles; “Go,” represents the next adventure enthusiasts take without spreading invasive species.

The DNR suggests leaving firewood at home and purchasing what you need near or at your destination while camping. According to the press release, the loss of Michigan native tree species due to invasive pests and diseases are increasing every year. The DNR states that firewood movement plays a role in introducing them to new areas.

In addition to year-round invasive species prevention, the DNR suggests practicing PlayCleanGo during the “Three Free” weekend on Saturday and Sunday. According to the press release, the event allows two days of free fishing, access to off-road trails and state parks, boating access sites, and other DNR managed sites.

“The start of the summer season is a great time to add PlayCleanGo to your recreation routine,” Foreman said in the press release. “Pack a boot brush or scrub brush in your vehicle so you can easily clean shoes before you move on. Make it a habit to check clothes and gear before leaving a recreation area and wash your bike or ORV before the next trip. If you’re hitting the water, clean, drain and dry your watercraft and fishing equipment to stop aquatic hitchhikers!”
