ALPENA — With the Culligan Plaza reconstruction underway downtown, the City of Alpena has received many suggestions

and ideas regarding what to do with the copper fountain feature, according to a press release from the city.

Since the fountain has been a significant part of Alpena’s history since 1981, city officials wanted to ensure it was retained by the city and kept on public display in some form.

Ray Speaks of Veolia, utility contractor for the city, suggested that it be kept in use in a different location. Residents may not be aware, but the circular flower garden at Bay View Park in front of the Kiwanis Kiddie Park used to be a fountain. Speaks suggested that location so that the fountain feature could continue to be appreciated.

On Wednesday, Mayor Cindy Johnson turned the fountain on at the new site for the first time.
