Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan presents the Northeast Michigan Artists’ Guild’s annual exhibit “Anything Goes,” now through July 30. This Saturday is the annual Log Cabin Day, with old-fashioned demonstrations and family-friendly activities in the Historic Village in the museum’s back yard. Partners in Prevention is hosting a Youth Mental Health First Aid class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday at Art in the Loft, on the third floor of the Center Building at 109 N. 2nd Ave. in downtown Alpena. This class is for all adults that work with and care for adolescents. In this fully in-person workshop, participants will learn how to identify, understand, and respond to mental health and substance use challenges in youth. Participants receive a certification from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. This course is available to the public, approved for NASW-Michigan CE Credits. Space is limited. From 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Alpena County Library will host Beginner Card Making for ages 13 to adult, with limited spots available. Interested card makers can pre-register and attend this craft class hosted by a community member. Participants will make around three cards at a beginner-friendly skill level. Members of the public are invited to learn more about local history and the recently approved National Register of Historic Places nomination for Downtown Alpena at a public meeting being held at 5 p.m. on Thursday at City Hall Council Chambers (208 N. 1st Ave, second floor, elevator available). On May 30, the State Historic Preservation Review Board approved the nomination of the Alpena Central Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places. The designation opens up some funding opportunities for property owners, including historic tax credits and other grant programs through the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). During the meeting, Architectural Historian Cheri Laflamme Szcondronski, who prepared the nomination, will be sharing information about the nomination and the history of our downtown, including its architectural and cultural significance. Alpena County Library will host Reading Buddies/Peer Buddies from 5 to 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays through Aug. 14, in two four-week sessions. Reading Buddies is an opportunity for youth going into kindergarten through third grade to read with their older peers. Peer Buddies will help participants navigate the collection, build literacy skills, and learn to love reading. Peer Buddies need to be in fourth grade or higher. The Alpena City Band will host an outdoor concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Alpena Bandshell at Bay View Park. The band will play every Thursday through Aug. 7, excluding the Patriotic Concert, which will be on Friday, the 4th of July. Other themed concerts will be the Children’s Concert on July 24, and the Polka Concert on Aug. 7. Bring a lawn chair for an hour of relaxing band music. The Alpena City Band rehearses every Tuesday at ACC’s Granum Theatre. All interested musicians are welcome to attend. The band is among Alpena’s longer-established civic organizations. MyMichigan Volunteers will host a used book sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday in the lobby at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena, 1501 W. Chisholm St., Alpena.
Friends Together will host a Rides Save Lives drive-thru fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday at 105 Prentiss St. in Alpena. Funds are being raised to continue founder Judy Burns’ promise of a community where no one faces cancer alone. Drive in, grab a hot dog and make your donation to Friends Together.
