ALPENA – On August 1, at 2 p.m., Vivian Furtaw will perform a concert entitled “An Afternoon of Arias and Art Songs” at Trinity Episcopal Church. Vivian Furtaw is a mezzo-soprano from Alpena, Michigan who is a recent graduate of Classical Voice from Interlochen Arts Academy.

Before completing her last two years of high school at Interlochen, Furtaw attended Alpena Public Schools and was a student of Julie Wood in both the choral program and in her private lesson studio with additional lessons from Jean Martin Baker. She also took flute lessons from Mary Ann Hubbard and performed in The Music Man as Zaneeta Shinn at Alpena Civic Theatre. Currently, she is studying with Martha Hart before she continues her studies at Eastman School of Music this fall.

Most recently, Furtaw competed as a National Semi-Finalist in the 5th Annual Schmidt Vocal Competition in Sarasota, FL. Her notable roles at Interlochen included singing the role of Prince Charming in Jules Massenet’s Cendrillion, Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, and Foreign Woman in Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Consul.

An “Afternoon of Arias and Art Songs” will include selections from Aaron Copland, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giacomo Puccini, Georges Bizet, Gustav Mahler, and Rogers & Hammerstein. She will be accompanied by Julie Wood and Jean Martin Baker on piano.

This performance is sponsored by the Thunder Bay Arts Council and is free and open to the public. A short reception will follow the concert hosted by Trinity Episcopal Church’s Women’s Group.
