Dr. Joseph Martin
ALPENA – First Congregational United Church of Christ in Alpena is thrilled to welcome internationally acclaimed composer and pianist Dr. Joseph Martin for a full day of music-making on May 16.
Dr. Martin–whose career includes 14 residencies at Carnegie Hall, performances at the Vatican, and the composition of more than 2,000 choral works–will lead an all‒day choral workshop from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Singers of all experience levels are invited to participate.
– Registration is required at www.alpenachoirclinic.com
– Cost: $10 (includes lunch)
– Participants will rehearse 11 Joseph Martin pieces with the composer himself.
The day culminates in a free community concert at 7:00 p.m. at First Congregational UCC Alpena, located at 201 S. 2nd Ave. The performance will feature the workshop choir, solo selections by Dr. Martin, stories from his musical journey, and a variety of uplifting, joyful, and toe‒tapping works.
“I am so excited for this concert! Joseph Martin is one of our absolute favorite composers, and after my very first meeting with him, I knew this was going to be something truly special. His music spans so many styles and genres, but one of our favorites is his modern gospel writing — toe‒tapping, clapping, humming‒along kind of music that’s deeply rooted in praise. And, his personality matches the music he writes. He is full of joy, and that joy shines through everything he creates. I’ve started calling this ‘The Joseph Martin Experience’ because that’s exactly what it is. This concert is going to be lively, refreshing, and full of heart. My hope is that everyone who walks through our doors leaves feeling lighter, encouraged, and a little more connected to the Spirit moving in and around us,” said Music Director Kat Tomaszewski.
