Busy April for Alcona library

ALCONA COUNTY — The Alpena County Library has released its schedule of events for April and it is going to be a busy month in Harrisville and Lincoln.

On April 2, there will be a Puzzle-palooza and a community jigsaw puzzle exchange at the Harrisville branch. If you already have completed a lot of the jigsaw puzzles in your collection, be sure to stop at the library to trade them for puzzles you’ve never seen before.

On the same day, The Friends of Alcona County Library are holding a Spring Quilt Raffle. The quilt is on display at the Harrisville branch, and tickets are available all month at the circulation desk and from Friends volunteers. The drawing will be held May 2nd. Ticket quantities are limited so get yours in early!

On Wednesdays at 1 p.m. next month, home schooled and alternatively-schooled students are invited to partake in the library’s weekly S.T.E.A.M. activity, intended for school-age kids who are able to read.

Every Thursday at 9 a.m., the Walking Club for everyone will meet in the parking lot at the main branch for an enjoyable stroll through Harrisville before the library opens.

Also on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. there is Story Time and Craft for young children. The library’s Children’s Specialist Melanie will read a story aloud, and lead a craft for young patrons and their grownups to enjoy.

Every Monday at 10:30 a.m. there is Music and Movement with Miss Melanie. The weekly program is geared for kids ages zero to 5 years old and the event will get the kids singing and dancing together.

On Tuesdays at 10 a.m. there are Ukulele Jams, where people can learn to strum crowd-pleasing songs both old and new with a collective of musicians.

On the first and third Tuesdays at 1:15 p.m. the Knitting Club and Crochet for all practitioners of the fiber arts, beginner to advanced will meet,

Also, on Wednesday, April 8th at 1:00 p.m., the Friends of Alcona County Library will hold their regular monthly meeting at the Harrisville branch.

On April 10 at the Harrisville branch it will be Free Popcorn Friday and people can help themselves to a bag of theater-style popcorn, while supplies last.

On April 13 at 2 p.m. there is “Make-it Monday” craft for adults. The April craft is a stenciled greeting card. A $3 supplies fee is required; please call 989 724-6796 to RSVP.

On April 14 at 2 p.m., the library board of trustees will hold its regular monthly meeting at the Harrisville branch.

On April 14 at 5 p.m., young fans of Pokemon are invited to join the library’s new Pokemon Club. The club ordinarily meets on the first Tuesday of the month, but will take place the second week in April.

On April 15 at 3:30 p.m., there is Watercolor Spring Blooms. Young artist Abigail Adams will lead a class in painting bouquets of watercolor florals, for students 8 years old to adult. There is a $5 fee for supplies. Please call 724-6796 to RSVP.

On April 16, 1 p.m., the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services will give a presentation on harmful algal blooms.

Michigan residents living near or visiting bodies of water should be aware of the potential for harmful algal blooms (HABs). Learn the basics of how to recognize blooms that can pose risks to your family and pets, what you can do and how to report them.

Also on April 16, at 6 p.m., the Alcona Historical Society’s Cabin Fever Lecture series presents “Sole Survivor” by Ric Mixter – historian, producer, author and diver. It’s rare that only one member of the crew survives a sinking, but some of the most incredible rescue stories are from those who alone made it ashore.

On April 21 at 5 p.m. is the Cookbook Club, which will meet to sample recipes from “My Bombay Kitchen” by Niloufer King. Copies are available at the Harrisville circulation desk.

On the same day at 5 p.m. Farmer and chef Adam Beckta will share his forestry knowledge in an educational and entertaining Tree-sentation.

On April 27 at noon, the Alcona Book Club will hold its regular monthly meeting to discuss “My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry” by Fredrik Backman. Copies are available at the Harrisville circulation desk.

On April 28 at 3 p.m., learn more from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services about how to eat safe fish and the guidelines to keep your meals safe and healthy.

On April 30 through May 2, the Friends of Alcona County Library will hold its spring book sale. Support library events and programs with your purchase of gently used books at unbeatable prices.
