The Alpha Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma met on March 9 at the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Library for a dinner meeting. Special guest was Allison Poli, a teacher at Thunder Bay Junior High School.
Before dinner, presentation was made of our Friend of Education Award, an annual award given to individuals, businesses or organizations who have supported the Alpena community. This year The Sunset Project was recognized as a group that promotes and supports mental health, artistic and creative expression. Accepting the award were Griffin Saddler, Board Member and Jackie Krawczak, Board President. Members later voted to support this organization with a financial contribution of $300.
It was announced that the Woman of Distinction for this year is Dr. Lisa Hilberg, a member of our Society. Dr. Hilberg is a retired principal of the Alpena Public Schools, retired from serving as interim principal at All Saints Catholic School, currently serves on the Alpena Community College Board and has been a contributing member to Alpha Xi, most recently leading the application process for us to become a 501(c)(3) organization.
Lori Vought informed the membership of a conference to be held in Gaylord, Michigan at Treetops Resort on April 24. BELONGS first conference will discuss the immigrant issue in northern Michigan and ways to support this population.
Our next meeting will be held at noon on Saturday, April 11 at the First United Methodist Church in Alpena. We will have a soup, salad luncheon and our annual fundraiser, an auction, of items donated by our membership.
