Busy month at the Alcona County Library
The Alcona County Library released its events for this month and it is going to be busy and there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
All events listed take place at the Harrisville branch. OThe library’s only event this month with a cover charge is the Feb. 9 Make-it Monday craft, but all other events are free.
Please note, all branches of Alcona County Library will be closed on Feb. 16 to observe Presidents’ Day.
Every Monday this month at 10:30 a.m. there will be Music and Movement with Miss Melanie. If the cold weather is keeping you and the kids indoors, the new weekly program for kids ages 0-5 years old will get them out of the house to sing and dance together.
Every Tuesday at 10 am there will be a Ukulele Jam. People can learn to strum crowd-pleasing songs both old and new with a welcoming collective of musicians.
On the first and third Tuesdays at 1:15 pm the Knitting Klub and Crochet for all practitioners of the fiber arts, beginner to advanced will be held and on Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. young fans of Pokemon are invited to join the library’s new Pokemon Club. Attend this inaugural club meeting and enjoy prizes, snacks, friends, and fun.
On Wednesday at 1 p.m. the Friends of Alcona County Library will hold its regular monthly meeting.
Also on Wednesdays, at 1 p.m., home schooled and alternatively-schooled youth are invited to partake in our weekly S.T.E.A.M. activity, intended for school-age kids who are able to read.
On Thursdays, at 9 a.m., the Walking Club for Everyone will meet in the parking lot at the main branch for an enjoyable stroll through Harrisville before the library opens.
Also every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. there will be story time and craft for young children. The library’s Children’s Specialist Melanie will read a story aloud, and lead a craft for young patrons and their grownups to enjoy.
On Friday, at the Harrisville branch, it will be Free Popcorn Friday. Visitors are encouraged to fill a bag of theater-style popcorn, while supplies last.
On Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. the library will host Make-it Monday crafts for adults. Our February craft is a decoupage drink coaster. A $5 supplies fee is required; please call 989 724-6796 to RSVP.
February 9 -14 is Love your Library week and all week long, while supplies last, visitors can enjoy free Michigan made snacks provided by the Friends of the Library, and complimentary coffee provided by Teresa McCurdy and Coffee Express.
On Feb. 13 people can celebrate Freaky Friday with a Spooky Scavenger hunt. Find one of our Friday the 13th trinkets hidden throughout the library and present it at the circulation desk for a prize.
On Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. the Cookbook Club will meet to sample recipes from “500 Soups” by Susannah Blake. Copies of the cookbook are available at the Harrisville circulation desk.
On Feb. 23 at noon, the Alcona Book Club will hold its regular monthly meeting to discuss “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” by Jean-Dominique Bauby. Copies are available at the Harrisville circulation desk.
On Feb 24 at 6 p.m. the Alcona Historical Society’s Cabin Fever Lecture Series presents “Murder and Mayhem: Alcona’s Historical Crimes.” Cheryl Peterson of the Alcona County Review explores some of the most fascinating historic mysteries in Alcona County and northern Michigan during this investigation into the region’s true historical crimes. This program is supported by a grant from the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan.
On Feb. 25 at 2 p.m., the Alcona County Library Board of Trustees will hold its regular monthly meeting at the Harrisville branch.
