On Feb. 12, at 1:30 pm, the Association of Lifelong Learners will host the third in its Adventures in Music series at the Granum Theatre at the Alpena Community College. Featured will be the brass sextet Bifocal Brass. Formed in the mid-1980s when a number of local brass players were asked to put together a group for a local church, this brass sextet started out with a small grant enabling the purchase of some music, and things just grew from there. The name “Bifocal Brass” refers to the fact that most members of the group are retired. Somewhat modeled after the famous Canadian Brass, Bifocal Brass plays a variety of music styles, including classical, show tunes, jazz, marches, and other traditional band music. Members of the group include: Mark Kroll, Ron Cady, Ben Westrope, Jon Hopkins, Larry McLennan, and Dennis Artley. The performance is free to the public with donations accepted. The show is made possible with the help of the Alpena Community College and the Granum Grant Program in addition to the Association of Lifelong Learners.
