ALPENA – MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena recently accepted a donation that represented proceeds from the 2025 Amrize Quarry Run.

For 11 years, Presque Isle Quarry, now operating as a part of Amrize, has supported their local community by hosting the Stoneport 5K Quarry Run/Walk. The race takes place in early August and allows registrants the opportunity to run through the impressive quarry and enjoy the natural beauty surrounding the site.

“Part of why we started the race was not only to celebrate our 60th anniversary but to open the doors and give people an opportunity to see the quarry,” shared Tim Cordes, plant manager, Amrize Presque Isle. “Where we work is set back, away from roads, and we knew people were curious about what we do. Hosting a run was a good way to invite the community into the space and let them see what a modern, working quarry looks like while also raising funds for a great cause.”

In earlier years the race honored an employee or retiree that was diagnosed with cancer. With an employee base of more than 90 workers, the Amrize workforce is a close-knit group and hearing a cancer diagnosis was difficult for all. “More recently, since almost everyone has been touched by cancer in some way, the run now honors all current and past employees that have had cancer. This event and what it stands for is important to us all,” explained Cordes.

The 2025 race raised $34,515 for the Alpena Cancer Center. Since its inception, the Quarry Run has provided nearly $400,000 in support of upgrades and advanced technology for the Cancer Center. Many of the funds are generated through corporate sponsorships of the race. Lead sponsors include McAllister CAT, Amrize Alpena, Alpena KFC, Austin Powder, FIS Group, HTSS LLC, St. Clair Aggregates and Superior Fabricating.

Ann Diamond, director, MyMichigan Health Foundation, shared, “All funds raised stay local and provide state-of-the-art cancer fighting equipment, advanced technology, and excellent care for the Alpena Cancer Center patients. These funds have also played a significant role in past renovations to the Cancer Center including the infusion area expansion and other upgrades to patient care areas.”

Diamond continued, “We are so grateful that Amrize continues to support the Cancer Center. Their sponsors and runners are incredibly generous. It’s truly amazing to think of what their donations have helped us to achieve over these years and the impact that has had on our patients and greater community. I cannot thank them enough or truly relay the importance of this partnership.”
