Alpena library book talk scheduled
The Alpena County Library is hosting a book talk with the historian of the Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians on Nov. 12, at 5:30 pm. Historian Deborah Richmond will discuss the tribe’s long-obscured history and a tragic chapter in Michigan’s history that has been kept hidden for over a century. On Oct.15, 1900, a Native American village at Burt Lake in Brutus, Michigan, was tragically razed to the ground, displacing families and stripping them of their ancestral lands and treaty rights. “A Cloud Over the Land” chronicles the events leading to this fateful day, detailing a series of actions that left the village in ruins.
This event is free and open to the public.
