ALPENA -- The Association of Lifelong Learners (ALL) programming for the week of Oct. 12 to 16 includes the following:

The Historic Cottages of Mackinac Island

Tuesday, Oct. 13

ACC Madeline Briggs Center 143 from noon to 1 p.m.

According to ALL, from 1870 to 1910, Mackinac Island rang with the sound of hammers as rows of cottages filled the bluffs. These homes reflected resort life on the island in its heyday. Come take a peek at the architectural details and glean insights into the families who settled the island's cottage communities.

Self-Defense for All Skill Levels

Tuesday, Oct. 13

ACC Madeline Briggs Center 140 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

This will be an interactive program on self-defense, according to ALL. Cristi Johnson,World Champion Powerlifting Coach and the owner of Skella Fit Personal Training, will guide attendees in self defense no matter their skill level. Please dress comfortably as all will be asked to participate for maximum learning. High heels are not recommended.

Johnson specializes in weight training, boxing, self-defense, and roller derby. She also hosts a free exercise program for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers on Thursdays at the 1st United Methodist Church in Alpena.

In this lecture, Dr. Stephanie Rogers will identify steps -- like nurturing your friendships, prioritizing physical activity, and caring for your hearing -- that meaningfully protect our cognitive health.

Whether you are looking to safeguard your own mind or support a loved one, you will learn why it is never too early, or too late, to take action. This is a Road Scholar Online Lecture presented via Zoom and offered by ALL for viewing at Madeline Briggs.
