Lake Huron Forever announces 2026 One Water Gathering

ALPENA -- Registration is now open for the One Water Gathering happening Oct. 1 to 2 in Alpena. According to a Huron Pines press release on Thursday, this is an annual conference of the Lake Huron Forever initiative, promoting water quality protection, and community sustainability in Michigan and Ontario.

The One Water Gathering is an international event bringing people from both sides of Lake Huron together to explore solutions, share best practices, and celebrate a sustainable future for our shared Great Lake, the release stated. Through programming, networking, and outdoor field trips, the gathering focuses on advancing water quality protection and healthy, sustainable communities across the Lake Huron watershed.
Attendees will include Canadian, United States, First Nations and Tribal partners, municipal leaders, watershed groups, regulatory agencies, engineers, landscape architects, school administrators, educators, artists, writers, musicians, and volunteers who all share a common goal of supporting a healthy Lake Huron forever.
"In 2026, the Lake Huron Forever initiative is focused on sharing the impact of the work being done to promote water quality and resilience in communities across the Lake Huron basin," Abigail Ertel, Huron Pines conference facilitator and director of community engagement, said in the release. "Alpena is leading by example with strong projects that meet the priorities of the initiative, backed by a supportive community and good planning at all levels of government, making it the perfect backdrop for this year's gathering. We're looking forward to welcoming our conservation partners, community leaders, and anyone interested in joining the initiative to Alpena."
The conference opens the afternoon of Thursday, Oct. 1 with registration, a welcome, and workshops led by initiative partners at Alpena Community College. A reception with refreshments will be held that evening.
Friday's programming will include a morning welcome, breakout sessions, and lunch, followed by afternoon field trips to tour initiative projects in Alpena and the surrounding community. A happy hour and Great Lakes trivia will conclude the day's activities.
