ALPENA — First Congregational United Church of Christ (UCC) in Alpena announced the arrival of its new settled pastor, Rev. Laura McMurry Hoffman, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the congregation, according to a press release on Monday.

Following the search process, church leaders expressed gratitude for what they described “as a clear sense of God’s guidance in calling Pastor Laura to serve both the church and the wider Alpena community.”

Hoffman brings experience in faith and ministry, according to the release. She earned her Master of Divinity from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and was ordained through the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship in 2003. She was later recognized by the American Baptist Churches USA in 2015 and is currently working toward full standing within the United Church of Christ.

Hoffman’s ministry spans a range of settings across the United States and Canada, including work as a hospital chaplain, educator, spiritual care leader, and minister to children, youth, and families. She has also been involved in developing educational programs, facilitating support groups, and building community-centered ministries.

Church leaders highlighted Hoffman’s passion for connecting with people and fostering inclusive, Christ-centered communities. Hoffman said her vision for First Congregational UCC is “to be known throughout Alpena as a place of love, compassion, and meaningful relationships.”

She hopes the church will be recognized as a strong and active presence “in the heart of Alpena for the good of Alpena.”

“At the core of her message is a simple but powerful calling: to love God and love others,” the release stated.

Community members are invited to welcome Hoffman at her first worship service at First Congregational UCC in Alpena on Sunday at 10 a.m. A special spring reception will immediately follow the service, offering an opportunity for attendees to meet Hoffman and her husband, Rev. Dr. Warren Hoffman.
