ALPENA — Michelle Larsen earned Best in Show in Art in the Loft’s juried art exhibit, “Hello Yellow,” for her majestic eagle piece called “Keeper of the Horizon.”

Winners were announced on Thursday at the opening reception of the annual juried art exhibit, with local artist Pamela O’Neil as juror. “Hello Yellow” features over 90 pieces of yellow-themed artwork created by over 50 artists. The exhibit will be on display at Art in the Loft through Nov. 1.

People’s Choice voting is open, and anyone can pay $1 per vote at the gallery to select their favorite piece or pieces from those on display in “Hello Yellow.” Almost all the art pieces on display are also for sale, unless already marked “sold.”

Artists who earned recognition, in addition to Larsen, are:

Also notable is an immersive art piece by Zachary Irving featuring a vintage projector that plays art pieces in a loop on the wall. The piece, titled “Yellow Rays,” is a Super 8 painted film projection.

“Zachary R. Irving’s work ‘Yellow Rays’ transforms a modest piece of mid-century technology — the Revere 8 mm projector — into a meditative portal of light, color, and motion,” a description of the piece explains. “The piece revolves around a single loop of clear Super 8 film, hand-painted entirely in shades of yellow.”

Visitors can turn on the motor switch, light switch, and forward switch to view the art in motion.

“This immersive experience foregrounds the human hand as part of the artwork; the performance of projection becomes inseparable from the projected image,” according to the instructions next to the projector.
