Delta Kappa Gamma meeting held
The September meeting of the Alpha Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of women educators, took place on Sept. 18 at Long Rapids First Congregational Church in Lachine.
After a catered dinner, President Beckie Thomson opened the meeting with a review of committee assignments for each member and the dates of the upcoming meetings. The meeting continued with Treasurer Carol Kindt presenting the proposed budget for 2025-2026. Betty Masters asked for volunteers to hostess visitors at Green School during Harvest Days at the Besser Museum and to decorate the Delta Kappa Gamma Christmas tree at the museum prior to the Season of Light.
Midge Connon then brought the members up-to-date on the status of the Myrna Kelly Scholarship Fund through the Alpena Community College Foundation. This scholarship is available to students entering the field of education. Alpha Xi’s goal is to increase the fund to $20,000 and support is needed to reach that goal.
Each year our group supports staff in the Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle Schools with a small gift to show appreciation for the work being done to educate children. Members were asked to submit ideas for this activity.
Lisa Hilberg has been chairing a committee looking into obtaining 501C3 status for Alpha Xi. Members were given a report of her efforts and volunteers were recruited to be on the Board of Directors of the new corporation. This new designation will allow us to apply for grants to fund the group’s purposes.
Our Alpha Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma is open to all female educators in Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle Counties. New members are welcome. If you are interested in joining, contact Julie Usher at 989-471-9182.
The next meeting of Alpha Xi will be held on Monday, Oct. 20 at Hunan Restaurant in Alpena.
