Teen volleyball tonight at Plaza Pool
Teens in grades 7 to 12 are invited to Free Summer Splash Volleyball from 7:30 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Alpena Plaza Pool, sponsored by the Alpena County Youth and Rec millage and Friends of Plaza Pool.
Used book sale Friday at MyMichigan
A used book sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday at the MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena lobby. Gently used books will be accepted behind the registration desk in the main lobby. (No textbooks or magazines).
Aliferis Memorial Race Saturday
The Aliferis Memorial Race will be held Saturday morning starting from MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena. The race is open to runners, walkers and bikers of all ages and ability levels.
It is named in memory of long-time Alpena Pathologist Peter Aliferis, M.D. Dr. Aliferis earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan and joined the hospital in 1963, serving for many years as the pathologies and laboratory director. He touched the lives of many in our community during his 37-year tenure. This race is a celebration of his steadfast dedication to health and wellness.
The race is sponsored by the Development Council of the MyMichigan Health Foundation serving Alpena. All proceeds will benefit the Peter Aliferis Scholarship Fund, the Cancer Center and patient enhancement projects and new technology at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena.

Harmony Festival this weekend
Harrisville Arts Council presents Harmony Festival, the annual arts and crafts show, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, on the corner of M-72 and U.S.-23 in Harrisville. The Labor Day parade will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Homestead Artisan Market and Gallery open this weekend
This is the last weekend of the season to shop at the Homestead Artisan Market and Gallery, 8015 E. Grand Lake Rd. Presque Isle. The Homestead is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday there will be a customer appreciation with donut holes, cider and popcorn. Come and celebrate another great season and meet some amazing artists.
Sunrise Side Co-op Market Holistic Healing Saturday
Sunrise Side Co-op Market’s 1st Annual Holistic Healing Fest — A complete Mind, Body and Spirit experience, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Bay View Park. The event will have activities, speakers, vendors and all the healing vibes one would expect.
The Sunrise Side Co-op Market is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday, with 40 vendors represented weekly for your bakery, farm products, wellness items and high-end gift needs, at the Alpena Marina at 400 E. Chisholm St., Alpena.
Gone To Pieces Quilt Guild trunk show Sept. 4
Gone To Pieces Quilt Guild will host a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, with a trunk show featuring Nancy McNally of Nancy McNally Quilts and Sew Anyways, from Goodrich, Michigan. The meeting and trunk show will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 167 S. Ripley Boulevard, Alpena.
Aid by the Dozen meetings held
Aid by the Dozen held meetings in July and August.
July 16 was the date chosen by Nancy Belanger to host the monthly meeting of the Aid by the Dozen at the 19th Hole.
Belanger made cards and passed them out to members at the meeting.
The members purchased articles of clothing to be presented to the Children’s Closet. Cards were sent to shut-ins, and thank you notes were read.
A hostess gift was won by Mariette Jore, who also provided a cake for the cake raffle, which was won by Marlene Montie.
Secret pals were many: Kaye Ross, Kim Mischley, Geri Skiba, and Belanger.
The August meeting took place on Wednesday, Aug. 20, with Lori Zeller as hostess. The meeting started with a pizza party and continued with the group’s fundraiser, the white elephant sale. Auctioneers were Catherine Murphy, Mariette Jore, and Carole Kelly. The monthly donation went to a local cancer patient. Murphy and Kelly won the cake giveaway, and Sherry Allen won the hostess gift. Secret gifts were given by Jore, Ross, and Leora Jacobs.
Jacobs will host the next meeting on Sept. 7 at the 19th Hole.
Bridge results announced
Alpena Duplicate Bridge Club results have been announced for the past three weeks.
On Aug. 11, Gordon Bennett and Marge French placed first, followed by Linda Clegg and Deanna Brege in second, and Beverley Rousseau and Marcy Sherman in third.
On Aug. 18, Jackie Kennedy came in first, followed by Deanna Brege in second, and Loretta Reynolds in third.
On Aug. 25, Marge French and Gordon Bennett placed first, followed by Deanna Brege and Linda Clegg in second, and Jan Kane and Ron Young in third.
