~ ALL will enjoy Ink on the Screen Part 1 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday at M. Briggs Center. Tom Ferguson will lead the program, with a special introduction by Doug Pugh. Newspapers drive the plot of countless movies, from the classic “Citizen Kane” to “Spotlight” and noir sizzlers.Old-time journalist (Detroit Free Press, Cleveland Plain Dealer, etc.) and movie buff Ferguson will entertain and inform with newspaper war stories and insights into some of his favorite ink-stained films. Smoking, drinking, language, flashing lights (but only inthe video clips shown). Part Two of the double feature (Thursday, September 4)will cover entirely different content. Ferguson worked as an editor and reporter at several of thecountry’s smallest newspapers and two of its biggest (the Detroit Free Pressand Detroit News), before moving on to what he calls “freelance word-pushing” — mostly editing and ghosting books and speeches. He is so old that he and his Free Press colleagues had pre-VCR popcorn parties with a rented movie and 16 mm projector.

Club advisor Amanda Pilarski also shares her knowledge and skills. This is one-on-one help that focuses on your situation and concerns.

~ The Aliferis Memorial Race will be held Saturday morning starting from MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena. The race is open to runners, walkers and bikers of all ages and ability levels. It is named in memory of long-time Alpena Pathologist Peter Aliferis, M.D. Dr. Aliferis earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan and joined the hospital in 1963, serving for many years as the pathologies and laboratory director. He touched the lives of many in our community during his 37-year tenure. This race is a celebration of his steadfast dedication to health and wellness. The race is sponsored by the Development Council of the MyMichigan Health Foundation serving Alpena. All proceeds will benefit the Peter Aliferis Scholarship Fund, the Cancer Center and patient enhancement projects and new technology at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena.
