We must tend to the garden of love, and weed out hate

Senior Attitudes

Sue Nagy

I think now that I’m a bit older, I believe the leprechauns of life are out to get me. Continual irritations like the darn water not boiling because I forgot to turn the stove on, or the muffins I made for a meeting being left on the counter when I arrived at said meeting. How about going to the basement to get a jar of jam, only to come up with a book and having to go back down for the jam? I’ve also gotten lost in a shopping center; it was their fault because there were no exit signs.

I wish Mr. Arthritis would leave me alone when I am outside trying to garden. Of course, I don’t want him to bother me when I am in bed or trying to sleep either.

OK, enough whining. I am a passenger in a car, looking at all the green landscape that I am speeding past. This state is a beautiful one, and that should make all of the residents proud to be a Michigander.

I love my country and am proud to be an American. My flags in my yard show all who drive by my love of country, and my signs show my love for all people. I, however, do worry that the state of my beloved country will slowly melt away before the citizens realize how poisonous hate is to ourselves.

How can we love those we say that we do, if we are filled with anger and hate for those we do not even know? They say that love is contagious. That is true, but so is hate. Like a garden, hate and weeds grow as quickly as vegetables. Like weeds, hate can overgrow our gardens. Therefore, we must pick the weeds of anger and hate before they overcome the vegetables of our personalities and love.

We are journeying towards the end of our lives. From the time we learn to walk and talk, we are meandering towards the end. So remember not to be so focused on the goal that you don’t enjoy the journey. Forgive some angry thoughts today, and walk towards God’s love.
