VFW Post 2496 Auxiliary July meeting held

The July 8 VFW Post 2496 Auxiliary meeting was called to order by past President Darryl McQuarrie at 6 p.m. with 16 members attending. The secretary and bingo reports were given and approved pending audit.

Donations to Tunnel 2 Towers for $250, Forgotten Eagles $100, Michigan Parkinson’s Foundation $100 and to a veteran fundraiser event $400 toward a gift basket raffle were approved.

The District 13 meeting will be held in Alpena at 10 a.m. on August 2 and will be preceded by a breakfast, starting at 8:30 a.m., hosted by the Auxiliary and Post.

The Fourth of July luncheon, honoring veterans, was a huge success with approximately 60 people enjoying hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and desserts.

The closing ritual was conducted and the meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m. The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 12.

Hillman VFW meeting held

A meeting of the Hillman VFW Post 2356 was held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, with 11 members present including new members, Daniel Bennett and Antonio DeAngelis.

Time was spent organizing VJ Day events for Aug. 9, honor guards and military funerals, plus a gun raffle. The Friday Night Fish Fry is still from 4 to 7 p.m. at the VFW Post.

The VFW did vote to increase fireworks funding, which is an additional $500.

On the second Monday of each month there will be a continuation of the V-J Day meetings at the VFW Post at 6 p.m. The public is welcome. This year’s VJ Day celebration will be held from Aug. 8 to 10.

You can call the current Montmorency County Veterans Affairs Office at 989-785-8043, or you can call the VFW Post 2356 veterans affairs officer, Bruce Brown, at 989-464-1373. He is extremely knowledgeable and wants to help any veterans in need.

The Post sells, made in the United States, polyester 3-foot by 5 -foot American flags for $30. The post also has an old flag drop box outside the front door. Speaking of flags, VFW members noticed the new flags flying in downtown Hillman.

If anyone has a flagpole they can’t use and wants to part with it, call Jim Stoddard at 989-742-4038 and the VFW will find someone who would love to use it.

Medical supplies are available for loan by calling Wayne at 989-255-4412. Anyone with medical items not needed is encouraged to call the VFW so they can continually upgrade. For Post Hall rentals, call Bob Hunt at 989-657-1162.

The next regular meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7.
