ALPENA — Reborn Rescue, Alpena’s newest dog rescue and recovery-centered nonprofit, is opening its doors to the public with a community-wide grand opening event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Located at 1017 Walter Street, just off M-32 past Aldi in the Township of Alpena, Reborn Rescue promises to be more than just a rescue — it’s a space where dogs and people heal together.

The grand opening celebration will offer fun for all ages. Guests can enjoy free snacks and Pepsi products, generously donated by Pepsi Bottling Co. of Lachine, as well as a bounce house provided by Vivero Industries (Vivero Entertainment). A pinata, “Adopt-A-Stuffy Station,” and meet-and-greets with ambassador dogs will also be part of the day’s activities. The first 20 visitors will receive a free gift as a thank-you for joining in the celebration.

What sets Reborn Rescue apart is its innovative approach. While rescuing and rehabilitating dogs is at its core, the organization is also deeply committed to supporting people in recovery from substance use disorder. Through a variety of animal-assisted therapy programs, Reborn Rescue provides emotional healing and connection not only for the animals it saves but for the individuals who care for them.

Visitors will learn about the many programs being offered through the rescue, including “Furry Friends for Seniors” held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday, birthday parties with ambassador dogs, a “Read to a Rescue” literacy program for elementary-age kids, Paws for Prevention for youth, weekday doggie daycare services, recovery meetings, and Healing Paws Yoga. Reborn Rescue also provides low-cost basic grooming, as well as a small pet shop featuring dog toys, accessories, and themed merchandise for dog lovers.

Kaitlyn Tree, the animal behavior specialist at Reborn Rescue, spoke about the heart behind the work.

“Rescue work is incredibly rewarding, but it’s also mentally, physically, and emotionally taxing,” she said. “Despite the challenges of animal rescue, there’s nothing more meaningful to me than helping dogs learn to trust again and find the love they deserve. Reborn Rescue represents so much hard work, heart, and hope, and I can’t wait to share it with our community.”

Founder and CEO Shannon Vivero added, “I have always wanted to have a dog rescue. I never imagined it would evolve into what I’ve created at Reborn Rescue. I am forever grateful for the support from our community. Most of all, I give thanks to my husband Carlos Vivero for being by my side every step of the way.”
