ALPENA — When you see a bright pink canopy at area events in Alpena and get a whiff of the sweet scent coming from it, you may want to stroll over to it and sample the gourmet pancakes being served.
Marisa and James Morrison are the owners of Pretty Little Pancakes, which offers a variety of tiny pancakes that can satisfy a craving for sweets, or a hankering for some buttery pancakes with fruit on them.
Marisa Morrison said Pretty Little Pancakes got the needed permits to operate at the end of June and is now serving customers at Friends of the Farmers Market events and more recently Art on the Bay. She said the business, which sticks out in a crowd because of the pink theming, will also be operating at other events. Marisa said although the business is new, it has been well-received and people are gravitating to the pink canopy to see what is being made inside of it.
“Everything is going really well and the pink is very attractive to the eye and people just sort of wander over,” she said. “When they see what we have, they get excited and their mouth starts watering.”
Besides the traditional pancakes, there are many toppings people can dress their pancakes with, Marisa said. She said there are various cereals that can be sprinkled on the top of the pancakes, including tiny marshmallows. There is also whipped cream, caramel drizzle, chocolate chips, brown sugar, syrup, and fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and bananas.

“We have pancakes that will pretty much suit everybody, no matter their taste,” she said. “People really seem to love them.”
Although they are working out of the canopy and the business is just getting off the ground, Marisa said she has larger goals for Pretty Little Pancakes. She said eventually, she would like to purchase a food truck, so it is easier to move from one location or another. For now though, she said she is just focused on promoting her business and establishing a customer base.
“I would love to have a food truck, but that is a large expense and we’re not at that point yet,” she said. “Right now, we’re operating within our means and this is what we started with, but eventually I would like a food truck.”
Marisa said she intends to try to set up her business at the annual Harmony Festival in Harrisville later this summer and intends to showcase her business more where there are large crowds. She said she knows growing her business will take some time, but she likes the start it is off to.
“Everything is just going well, and I’m thrilled with how this has been received,” she said.
