~ Friends Together presents Art with Friends from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at 105 Prentiss, Alpena, led by Melissa Burns. Learn to harness the power of creativity and beauty through art while engaging with others who have been impacted by cancer. Whether you are a current patient, a survivor, a caregiver or a loved one of someone who had a cancer diagnosis, you are welcome to attend this free class. ~ Join the Alpena County Library from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday and Thursday this week for Open MakerLab Camp. Unleash your creativity and explore the timeless craft of linocut printmaking in this hands-on workshop. This two-day workshop offers an inspiring introduction to the tools, techniques, and creative process behind linoleum block printing. Students will create a linocut stamp that they will use to print on a T-shirt. Registration is required and space is limited. To register, call 989-356-6188, ext. 20. Staff help is available. ~ ALL will hear an Overview of Hospice of Michigan’s Special Programs from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday at M. This presentation will highlight Hospice of Michigan’s veteran, integrated therapies, gestures of grace and pediatrics hospice care programs.

A representative of Alpena Insurance Agency will be joining in this presentation to provide an understanding of condominium insurance and answer questions.

~ Alpena County Library will host Reading Buddies/Peer Buddies from 5 to 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays through Aug. 14, in two four-week sessions. Reading Buddies is an opportunity for youth going into kindergarten through third grade to read with their older peers. Peer Buddies will help participants navigate the collection, build literacy skills, and learn to love reading. Peer Buddies need to be in fourth grade or higher. ~ The Alpena City Band will host an outdoor concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Alpena Bandshell at Bay View Park. The band will play every Thursday through Aug. 7. Themed concerts will be the Children’s Concert on July 24, and the Polka Concert on Aug. 7. Bring a lawn chair for an hour of relaxing band music. The Alpena City Band rehearses every Tuesday at ACC’s Granum Theatre. All interested musicians are welcome to attend. The band is among Alpena’s longer-established civic organizations. ~ The Alpena Plaza Pool is hosting a free Teen Volleyball event for grades 7 to 12 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday at the pool, located inside Alpena High School, 3303 S. 3rd Ave. This is not an Alpena Public Schools event. It is sponsored by the Friends of Plaza Pool and the Alpena County Youth and Recreation Grant.
Friday, July 18
~ ALL pickleball plays from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
~ Exercise is at 10 a.m. at Alpena Senior Citizens Center. Then at noon, Mahjong is played, and pinochle starts at 12:30 p.m.

~ Community Art Swap — Bring Art, Take Art! Refresh your creativity and your space at Alcona County Library in Harrisville. Bring gently used art supplies and/or already-created artwork, framed or unframed, any style or size, and swap them for something new to you. It’s a fun, free way to share inspiration and connect with fellow art lovers in the community. All ages and skill levels are welcome. ~ Wine and craft beer tasting will be held from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, for $20 per adult, 21 and older, which includes a wine sampling glass, at the Alpena Beverage Co. tent at the Michigan Brown Trout Festival.

~ Quiet Riot will perform from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday. The event is presented by Dream Chaser Entertainment LLC. Raggedy Ann and Driving Dawn will also perform on Saturday. ~ Thunder Bay Arts Council presents the 48th Annual Art on the Bay open air fine art and craft show, continuing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Bay View Park in Alpena.
~ Brown Trout Family Day is from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Michigan Brown Trout Festival in Alpena, featuring the 9th Annual PNC Bank Kiddie Classic Fishing Tournament for ages 1 to 14. The tournament runs from 7 a.m. to noon with awards at 2:30 p.m. in the Veolia Big Tent. Kids can pre-register for the Kiddie Classic at PNC Bank, 122 N. 2nd Ave. or register the day of in the Veolia Big Tent. A Family Day concert will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Bay View Park, with Jennifer Daniels, sponsored by the AMA-ESD. The event will also feature NEMCSA preschool and early preschool projects to go, hockey with Alpena Hockey Association, a balloon arch by Three 2 Me Balloons with a photo op with forest animals, The Home Depot DIY take-home building kits, emergency service vehicles and first responders, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the U.S. Army and National Guard, free trees to take home to plant from Alpena-Montmorency Conservation District, sea lamphrey with Great Lakes Fishery, the Boys and Girls Club and the Youth Volunteer Corps, free school supplies for the first 400 kids ages 3 to 12 (ages newborn to 3 receive storybooks), the Alpena County Library, the MyMichigan Trauma Team promoting water safety, and more. Snacks will be provided. Every youth who attends will receive a BINGO board and be entered to win prizes.

~ A cornhole tournament will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Michigan Brown Trout Festival in Alpena. Registration begins at 4 p.m. and the tournament starts at 4:30 p.m. The entry fee is $25 per person or $50 per team, and you must be 21 or over to enter.
