Alcona County Library hosting August programs

HARRISVILLE — Alcona County Library is hosting a variety of free events in August. If you have questions about any events, call the library at 989-724-6796. Unless otherwise noted, events are held at the Harrisville branch, 312 W. Main St., Harrisville.

On Friday and Saturday, Aug. 1 and 2, discover deals on pre-owned books at the Friends of Alcona County Library Summer Book Sale.

On the first Friday of the month, Aug. 1, Free Popcorn Friday is held, with free theater-style popcorn, while supplies last.

On Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 1:30 p.m. at Curtis Township Library in Glennie, uncover the secrets of Michigan agates and Yooperlites, presented by Jordan Luebben of Michigan Gems.

Every Tuesday (Aug. 5, 12, 19, and 26) at 10 a.m. is ukulele jam. Learn to strum crowd-pleasing songs both old and new with a welcoming collective of musicians.

On the first and third Tuesdays (Aug. 5 and 19) at 1:15 p.m., Knitting Klub and Crochet is held for all practitioners of the fiber arts, beginner to advanced.

On Wednesdays, Aug. 6, 20, and 27 at 1 p.m., homeschooled and alternatively-schooled youth are invited to partake in a weekly S.T.E.A.M. activity, for school-age kids who are able to read.

On the first and third Wednesdays (Aug. 6 and 20) at 2 p.m., enjoy Family Movie Matinee on the library’s Hi-Definition projector with free theater-style popcorn.

Thursday, Aug. 7th is an all-day Community Puzzle Swap. Bring in some puzzles you’ve already solved and exchange them for puzzles you haven’t.

Every Thursday (Aug. 7, 14, 21, and 28) at 9 a.m., Walking Club meets in the parking lot at the main branch for an enjoyable stroll through Harrisville before the library opens.

On Thursdays, Aug. 7 and 14 at 11 a.m. under the gazebo, juggling club for teens and tweens will be held. Learn this relaxing and entertaining skill in a casual atmosphere, with bean bags supplied.

On Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 1:30 p.m., bring your child to meet a real live mermaid at the Harrisville State Park picnic area. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for entry into the park.

Every Friday at 10:30 a.m., Story Time and Craft for young children is held, with Children’s Specialist Melanie reading a story aloud, and leading a craft.

Monday, Aug. 11 at 2 p.m. is “Make-it Monday” craft for adults. The project for August will be collaborative popsicle-stick art. All supplies are provided. Registration is required by calling 989-724-6796.

On Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 5 p.m., Cookbook Club will meet to share recipes from “Comfort Food the Cowboy Way” by Kent and Shannon Rollins. Copies will be available at the Harrisville circulation desk.

On Thursday, Aug. 21 at 11 a.m., Celebrate National Senior Citizens day and enjoy some friendly competition with an entertaining Musical Bingo game.

On Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 25, 27, and 28 at 10 a.m., develop your balancing skill and safeguard yourself from falls with a free balance class, presented by Liz McNichols of Harrisville Yoga.

On Monday, Aug. 25 at noon, Alcona Book Club will meet to discuss “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson. Copies are avaiable at the Harrisville branch circulation desk.

On Wednesday, Aug. 27th at 2 p.m., the Alcona County Library Board of Trustees will hold their regular monthly meeting at the Harrisville branch.

All branches of the Alcona County Library will be closed Saturday, Aug. 30 through Monday, Sept. 1 to observe Labor Day.
