ALPENA — The second annual Swings for Seniors four-person golf outing will be held on Saturday at Alpena Golf Club. The cost is $80 per person for non-AGC members, and $60 each for AGC members, which includes 18 holes, cart rental, and lunch. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Meals on Wheels program at Alpena Senior Citizens Center.

Pre-registration is open by calling Jeremy at 989-884-2218, or BJ Sander at 989-356-3585. Same-day registration will begin at 9 a.m. A shotgun start will be at 10 a.m.

“We have many amazing sponsors,” said Annie Hepburn, director of the Alpena Senior Citizens Center. “There is a sponsor for each hole at the event.”

The event will feature a putting contest sponsored by Bogey’s Indoor Golf with a prize of a new putter, a longest drive contest sponsored by Robert Barrigar Insurance Agency with a prize of a new driver, a contest for closest to the pin for a golf gift package valued at $250 sponsored by DJ Van Durst, and two huge hole-in-one prizes: Hole #3 — $30,000 toward a new GMC from Alpena GMC, and Hole #13 — $10,000 cash prize from Assured Partners.

“There are lots of exciting different challenges and chances to win,” Hepburn said. “We’re very grateful for all the sponsors that have stepped up this year.”

She explained why it’s important to support the Meals on Wheels program.

“With the increase in food costs and supplies, any help toward helping the seniors to be able to receive those meals is always beneficial,” Hepburn said. “We want to continue to offer such an amazing program to all the seniors in Alpena County. We don’t just provide Meals on Wheels or our programs within the city limits. It’s the whole Alpena County, and I’m not sure that all of our outlying area seniors know that. If they’re in Alpena County and over the age of 60, they could potentially qualify for Meals on Wheels or other services.”

She added that Meals on Wheels, as well as congregate lunches at the center, are offered to those 60 and up for a suggested donation of $4.50 per meal, but that it is suggested and seniors can pay whatever they are able to afford. Others in the community under age 60 are welcome to eat lunch at the senior center as well, for a cost of $8 per meal.

Anyone interested in learning more about the Meals on Wheels program is encouraged to call the senior center at 989-356-3585.
