Marine Corps League to meet tonight
The Marine Corps League will meet at 7 p.m. tonight at the VFW on Connon Street in Alpena. Plans will be discussed for the annual picnic on Saturday, July 26 at the Starlite Beach Pavilion.
Youth Mental Health First Aid Thursday
Partners in Prevention is hosting a Youth Mental Health First Aid class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday at Art in the Loft, on the third floor of the Center Building at 109 N. 2nd Ave. in downtown Alpena. This class is for all adults that work with and care for adolescents. In this fully in-person workshop, participants will learn how to identify, understand, and respond to mental health and substance use challenges in youth. Participants receive a certification from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. This course is available to the public, approved for NASW-Michigan CE Credits. Space is limited. Card making class Thursday at Alpena library
From 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Alpena County Library will host Beginner Card Making for ages 13 to adult, with limited spots available. Interested card makers can pre-register and attend this craft class hosted by a community member. Participants will make around three cards at a beginner-friendly skill level. Crafters will need the full two to two-and-a-half hours to make the cards. For more information, call the library at 989-356-6188.
Reading Buddies Thursday at ACL
Alpena County Library will host Reading Buddies/Peer Buddies from 5 to 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays through Aug. 14, in two four-week sessions. Reading Buddies is an opportunity for youth going into kindergarten through third grade to read with their older peers. Peer Buddies will help participants navigate the collection, build literacy skills, and learn to love reading. Peer Buddies need to be in fourth grade or higher. If Peer Buddies need volunteer hours, you must follow the guidelines for a work permit at https://bit.ly/43nwyd5. Snacks will be provided for all participants. Citywide Garage Sales Friday, Saturday
The eighth annual Alpena Citywide Garage Sales will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Participating addresses and the citywide map can be seen on the back page of today’s Sports section (page 6B).
Friends Together fundraiser Friday
Friends Together will host a Rides Save Lives drive-thru fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday at 105 Prentiss St. in Alpena. Funds are being raised to continue founder Judy Burns’ promise of a community where no one faces cancer alone. Drive in, grab a hot dog and make your donation to Friends Together.
Friday is National Food Truck Day
Friday is National Food Truck Day, and Northland Area Federal Credit Union will host a celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their Alpena Headquarters, 1161 N. Bagley St. Food trucks on-site will include Zoos Tasty Eatz from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., KC Sizzle and Smoke from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Uncle Mike’s from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Craft fair Saturday
The Refuge Youth Group at TriPoint Church of God is hosting a Summer Craft Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Come and shop some of your favorite local vendors while supporting local youth at this outdoor event at 500 S. Brooke St., Alpena.
