ALPENA — Bradley Somers, CEO, and Jennifer Calery, Board Chair of the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena, were recognized with the prestigious CEO of the Year and Board Member of the Year awards at the Michigan Youth of the Year and Michigan Club Alliance Conference, held from April 21 through 23 in East Lansing.

These awards, which honor exemplary leadership and impactful contributions to youth development, were presented during the annual conference attended by leaders and advocates of Michigan’s youth and Boys and Girls Clubs. This year’s event brought together hundreds of professionals dedicated to creating positive change for young people across the state, celebrating the transformative power of mentorship, leadership, and community engagement.

Since becoming CEO in 2011, Brad has led the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena with vision, passion, and a deep commitment to empowering young people. Under his leadership, the organization has expanded its programs, increased its reach, and provided critical resources to thousands of youth in the community.

“I am deeply honored to be named Chief Executive Officer of the Year,” Somers said in a press release. “This recognition is not mine alone — it is a testament to the incredible work, dedication, and passion of the entire Boys and Girls Club team and community. I want to sincerely thank my colleagues, our state partners, and the community of Alpena for your trust, collaboration, and unwavering support. Together, we’ve built something meaningful, and I’m truly grateful to lead alongside such committed and inspiring people.”

The CEO of the Year award honors an individual whose leadership has driven organizational success, created positive change, and inspired innovation in the field of youth services. Under Somers’ guidance, the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena has become a cornerstone of support for children and teens, offering programs that focus on academic success, character development, and healthy lifestyles.

Calery was recognized for her relentless dedication to the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena, guiding it through a period of growth, program expansion, and community outreach. Since joining the Board of Directors, Calery has been an instrumental force behind strategic initiatives that have transformed the lives of countless youth in the community. Through her leadership, the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena has successfully increased access and advocated for the implementation of critical programs for our community’s next generation.

“This award is really special to me, and I’m truly honored,” Calery said in a press release. “The incredible Club leaders and staff across the state — and especially right here in Alpena — inspire me to serve. I volunteer alongside them because I believe so deeply in our mission, and because they remind me every day what’s possible when we put kids first. Our members are filled with hope, potential, and the promise of great futures — and that’s what drives everything we do. I couldn’t be more proud that Brad has been named Boys and Girls Club CEO of the Year. He is the heart of our Club — passionate, visionary, and deeply committed to the kids and families of Alpena and our region. Watching him pour everything into this mission day after day is inspiring, and I truly can’t think of anyone more deserving. I’m incredibly grateful to work with him — and even more grateful to call him a friend.”

The Board Member of the Year award recognizes leaders who have gone above and beyond to ensure the long-term sustainability and success of the organization. Calery’s proactive involvement in fundraising, strategic planning, and advocacy efforts has helped the Boys and Girls Club build stronger relationships within the community, attract new resources, and enhance its programs.
