ALPENA – Augie and Peggy Matuzak are the featured artists for May and June at Thunder Bay Arts Gallery, 127 W. Chisholm St., Alpena.

Stop by the gallery from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, to see their one-of-a-kind pieces and the artwork of 20 additional local artists.

A reception for the Matuzaks will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 9 in the TBA Gallery. The reception is open to the public and free of charge.

The Matuzaks are glass artists working with fused glass formed in a kiln.

While Peggy has been doing fused glass work for over 30 years, Augie is a newcomer to the world of fused art. Both work out of their combined studio at their winter home in Surprise, Arizona. Peggy works with traditional styles and forms using intricate detail and precision in her work. She also makes fused glass art and jewelry. She loves to create unique items for both practical purposes as well as decorative items for the home. In the past, her work has been featured in galleries on Mackinac Island and Suttons Bay as well as St. Ignace.

Augie works with special kiln-fired glass and finds that the random free flowing style of his work suits him best. Vibrant colors and shapes define each one-of-a-kind piece. Glass pieces can range from small dishes or plates to larger platters or bowls that can grace a table or be displayed in a cabinet. His current passion is creating intricate weave pattern glass pieces that are mounted on frames. All are food-safe and can be either used for serving or simply enjoying. Special requests are not a problem to honor, as any color scheme or design can be incorporated into a custom piece. Augie currently has his work on display in St. Ignace.

Both artists find time to display and sell at summer art shows in Petoskey and at the Homestead in Grand Lake as well as the Grand Lake Art Show.
