Dr. Tom’s last Words and Music will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Alpena County Library. The theme is “Regarding Ray Charles.” Dr. Tom (Tom Ferguson) first approached the READ Program in 2023 with the idea of doing informal monthly lunchtime shows in which all of his tips would be donated to the READ Program. Since then, he has donated a total of $1,342 to the READ Program, allowing the program to buy materials which their learners use during their weekly reading and ESl tutoring lessons.

The Alcona Historical Society invites the public to a free Cabin Fever program on the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Alcona Township Hall, 5576 U.S.-23, Black River. Author and producer Ric Mixter will present photos and rare underwater footage from his visit to the Fitz in 1994. There will be a light meal and a brief annual meeting, highlighting plans for the 2025 summer season, followed by Mixter’s program. The Hillman VFW Post 2356 hosts its Friday Night Fish Fry from 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday, with your choice of fish or shrimp, potato, coleslaw, roll, and drink. The fish fry is open to the public, and the cost is $12 for the fish dinner or $14 for the shrimp dinner.

An Ancient World Beneath Lake Huron lecture will be at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for this free lecture, presented by Dr. Ashley Lemke, archaeologist, anthropologist, and Explorers Club fellow.

A dog vaccine clinic will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday inside the Merchant’s Building at the Alpena County Fairgrounds, 625 S. 11th Ave. Rabies vaccines will be $20, and core vaccines are $25, payable by cash or check only. SATURDAY, May 17

Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health Authority will host the third annual Mental Health Movement 2K, 5K, and 10K Run/Walk. All three events will be chip-timed. Sign up at runsignup.com. Registration ends at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, and there will be no same-day registration. Early bib/packet pickup will be available on Thursday and Friday. Day of bib/packet pickup will open at 7:30 a.m. The 10K run will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 2K and 5K run/walks at 8:45 a.m. Children ages 11 and younger are free to register and they will receive finisher medals. All routes will begin and end at 400 Johnson St., Alpena.

The MATE ROV Competition begins at 9 a.m., with the awards ceremony at 3 p.m. at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena. Teams will drive their ROVs in the Marine Technology Training Tank adjacent to the Heritage Center, and there will be a live stream of the underwater challenges in the theater. This free event is open to spectators.

Join the Alpena Downtown Development Authority and the Friends of Alpena Area Gardens from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday to plant flowers around treeboxes and get downtown ready for summer. Volunteers should meet in Culligan Plaza with garden gloves and small shovels.

The Ninth Annual Alpena Blessing of the Bikes will be held on Saturday, with bike registration starting at 10 a.m., and the Blessing of the Bikes led by Pastor Leslie Nye at 11 a.m. After a group ride with five stops, a pig roast by The Smoking Pig will be held at 5 p.m. at the Eagles Club, along with a silent auction and raffle. The community is welcome, and the cost is $12 per plate.

Purr Creations Craft Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at McRae Park, 1301 N. 2nd Ave., Alpena. The day includes raffles, food, and fun, with all proceeds to Northeast Michigan Trap Neuter Return.

The Sunrise Side Co-op Market is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday, with 40 vendors represented weekly for your bakery, farm products, wellness items and high-end gift needs, at the Alpena Marina at 400 E. Chisholm St., Alpena.

Alcona County Library will host an 85th anniversary party at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, with live music and tasty treats, open to the public.
