Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Feb. 15 during Alpena Ice Festival

ALPENA — The Special Olympics Michigan Law Enforcement Polar Plunge is just around the corner. The Alpena Polar Plunge will take place on Saturday, Feb. 15 in downtown Alpena at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Water Street, in conjunction with the Alpena Ice Festival.

The plunge will begin with registration starting at 2 p.m., and participants will take the plunge at 3 p.m. There will be a 50/50 raffle, with the winning ticket being drawn after the plunge awards, following the last plunger.

The participants dress up in costume and prepare to plunge in the frigid waters for a good cause. The money raised supports local Special Olympics athletes who travel to all the athletic events. Organizers hope to get a great turnout this year to support our athletes from northern Michigan.

The statewide Polar Plunge events help raise funds for nearly 21,000 athletes who participate in Special Olympics Michigan. Special Olympics Michigan is a year-round program offering sports for those with intellectual disabilities. Although sports are the “vehicle,” the goal of Special Olympics is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate and receive respect as members of their communities.

For more information about the event, or if you want to participate, contact Trooper Jason Kunath at the Michigan State Police Alpena Post at 989-354-4101.
