Medical Center to host breast cancer screening event
ALPENA — As the leading breast health provider in the region, MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena is hosting a special breast cancer screening event with extended mammogram hours and special giveaways.
The event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Medical Center in Alpena located at 1501 W. Chisholm St. Attendees can check in at the hospital entrance and will be directed to the mammography suite.
“It is important that women, beginning at the age of 40, get their annual mammogram,” said Dorothy Sheldon, R.N., B.S.N., breast nurse navigator, MyMichigan Health. “We are offering special screening times to offer women a more convenient time to schedule their mammogram, and all our mammograms use 3D technology.”
With 3D mammography, breast cancer can be detected at even earlier stages, reducing the rates of breast cancer deaths. This state-of-the-art technology allows a radiologist to see through the breast tissue layer by layer.
MyMichigan Health recommends a yearly mammogram because it’s the only test shown to reduce breast cancer deaths. Mammograms can detect cancer early, when it’s most treatable. This improves odds of survival and can help patients avoid extensive treatment.
Appointments are required for mammograms. Those interested in making an appointment may call 989-633-5252 or 888-367-2778. A provider’s order is needed, and insurance will be billed for the mammogram.
