Second Chance Animal Shelter will host a cat and kitten adoption event and microchip clinic on Saturday.

∫ Art in the Loft, on the third floor of the Center Building at 109 N. 2nd Ave. in Alpena, presents its “SummerView 2024” Exhibit, featuring the artwork of nearly 40 artists on display and for sale now through Aug. 31. Cindy Johnson served on the Planning Commission for 11 years before being elected to the city council in 2014. On city council, she served as the first female mayor pro tempore for the city for six years before being appointed mayor in January 2024.

∫ Alpena County Sheriff’s Office and the Alpena Police Department invite you to Bookbags and Badges, a school supply drive from 8 a.m. to noon on Aug. 22 and 23 at Walmart. The local police departments are currently running a community initiative to collect school supplies for children of all ages. Once collected, the officers will personally deliver the donated items to area schools. Supplies needed include: pencils, pens, highlighters, loose paper, folders, binders, notebooks, water bottles, tissues, hand sanitizer, crayons, markers, colored pencils, backpacks, scissors, pencil cases, and erasers.

In November 2023, the boundaries of the Alpena DDA were expanded to incorporate the north side of Second Avenue, the Thunder Bay River, and the Chisholm Street corridor. ∫ Alpena County Library will host a diamond painting night, for ages 18 and up, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the library, 211 N. 1st Ave., Alpena. Diamond painting uses kits to decorate an image or item that is glue-ready with rhinestones. Participants will be able to choose from a variety of designs. ∫ ALL hosts contract bridge from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Fridays at M. Briggs Center. This is an ongoing group of card players who welcome any players at any time. This group is a teaching class but experienced players are also welcome.

∫ Grace Episcopal Church on Long Rapids Road in Lachine is hosting an ice cream social from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, open to the public. The cost is by donation. There will be hot dogs, sandwiches, cold salads, and assorted desserts. Thanks to the community’s generous donations, Grace Episcopal was able to give a combined $900 to three different nonprofit organizations. They are grateful for the community support, and invite everyone to attend Friday’s event.

∫ The Hillman VFW Post 2356 hosts its Friday Night Fish Fry from 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday night, with your choice of fish or shrimp, potato, coleslaw, roll, and drink. The fish fry is open to the public, and the cost is $12 for the fish dinner or $14 for the shrimp dinner.

∫ The Alpena Hockey Association presents the second annual Pucks and Pints Gala: Embracing Heritage and Championing a New Legacy. The event will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday at Northern Lights Arena, 751 Woodward Ave., Alpena. Proceeds will benefit youth hockey in Alpena. The mission of the current board is to make hockey affordable and inclusive for everyone. The evening will take place on The Pond and include a catered dinner, commemorative pint glass, and live and silent auctions. Tickets are $30 per person. Tables of eight can be purchased to guarantee seating with your friends. Sponsorship levels are available for those who wish to contribute at different levels. The “Hometown Hero” sponsorship, at $100, is also available for those who wish to contribute but cannot attend the event.

Decorate a cupcake, shop at a pop-up bake sale, chat with volunteers, see restoration progress and support efforts to save the Historic Harrisville Depot. ∫ Second Chance Animal Shelter is hosting a cat and kitten adoption event and affordable microchip clinic on Saturday. The microchip clinic is for cats and dogs, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., for $25 per pet. This event is walk-in only; dogs must be on a leash with a well-fitting harness/collar, and cats must be in a crate. The cat and kitten adoption event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The adoption fee for kittens is $100 each or two for $150, which includes a veterinarian checkup, age appropriate vaccinations, and a free coupon for spaying or neutering when they are old enough. The adoption fee for cats is $125, which includes a vet check, rabies vaccination, microchip, and they are already fixed.

∫ Sam Rumbles State Farm Insurance invites the public to the Downtown Drive-In and Dine Car Show from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday in downtown Alpena. All types of unique cars are welcome; it doesn’t have to be a classic to enter. No prior registration necessary. Ballots will be collected for the voters’ choice award, with a winner being announced at 8 p.m. In addition to the car show, there will be food trucks and live music! This free event is open to all ages. This event was rescheduled from the prior weekend because of weather.

∫ True North Radio Network presents the final summer concert of the season, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Alpena Bandshell at Bay View Park. Vinyl Underground will play classic rock and dance music. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on, and bring the whole family out for end-of-summer fun!

Sunday, August 25

∫ St. Augustine Church will host Fiesta-val, a fundraising event with music, dancing, lives and silent auctions, games for children, Mexican cuisine, raffles, a 50/50 drawing, beer, and wine. Festivities will be held after the 10 a.m. mass on Sunday. The food is being donated by Pompeyos Mexican Grill. The Mexican dinner is $10 per adult, and free for children 12 and younger. Raffle tickets are available for $20 each or 6 for $100, for a chance to win. There will be three grand prize drawings, winner’s choice of $5,000 cash, a trophy buck hunt at LimberLost Farms, or a Legend premium aluminum utility trailer. There will be four second-place drawings for $1,000 cash each, and two third-place drawings for $500 cash each. The drawing will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 27. All proceeds will benefit St. Augustine Church. The church is located at 24138 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hillman.
