∫ The 41st Annual Alpena Antique Tractor and Steam Engine Show continues Saturday and Sunday at the Alpena Antique Tractor and Steam Engine Showgrounds, 6850 French Road, Alpena. Gates open daily at 9 a.m., and admission is free. This year’s event will feature Case Tractors. There will be daily demonstrations with vintage farm equipment, food concessions, live music by the Country Poorboys at 8 p.m. on Saturday. A tractor parade will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, and at noon on Sunday. Bean soup will be served at 5 p.m. on Saturday. A pancake breakfast will be served at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
∫ The Friends of the Alpena County Library will hold their annual used book sale from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday; from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9; and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, which will also be the $5 per bag sale. For more information, call the library at 989-356-6188.
∫ Sidewalk Sales are on in Downtown Alpena! On Friday and Saturday, enjoy special discounts, marked down merchandise, and unique finds from over 20 local businesses throughout downtown. ∫ The Harrisville Farmers Market, located in the upper parking lot of the Harrisville Harbor at the corner of N. Lake Street and E. Harbor Lane, is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays from June through October. Market items are locally produced, grown, harvested, baked, and gathered. ∫ The Grand Lake branch of Presque Isle District Library will host a book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the library, 18132 Lake Esau Highway, Presque Isle. Stock up on summer reading. Books will be sold by freewill donation, with all proceeds used to improve the library. This event is sponsored by Friends of the Grand Lake Library.
∫ The United Way of Northeast Michigan is sponsoring Stuff the Bus with school supplies, collecting items from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in front of Walgreen’s on the corner of Bagley and M-32 in Alpena. Supplies needed for students in grades 6 through 12 include: single subject notebooks, colored pencils, mechanical pencils, erasers, white out, highlighters, pocket folders, tissues, and hand sanitizer.
∫ The Homestead Artisan Market and Gallery is in the Kauffman Homestead 8015 E. Grand Lake Road in Grand Lake. The Kauffman Homestead is owned by the Grand Lake Association and is a historical site. They have allowed local crafters and artists to sell their items since the 1970s. An artisan market is like a farmers market, a place giving you an opportunity to meet the creators and learn how and by whom your unique product was made. The Homestead Artisan Market and Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, now through Labor Day, and some special activity days. ∫ The Alcona County Fair continues on Saturday, with Just a Girl With a Brush face painting all day. Motocross racing starts at 11 a.m., the carnival opens at noon, a flapjack-eating contest for all ages starts at 1 p.m., a pinewood derby starts at 2 p.m., wee showmanship for small tots is at 3:30 p.m., a kids’ giveaway is at 5 p.m., an open horse speed show is at 6 p.m., Grounded Band plays onstage at 7 p.m., which is the same time the Bump and Run starts, by TNT Demolition Derby. ∫ The public is welcome to attend a Pork Roast Dinner Fundraiser sponsored by the Hubbard Lake Sportsman and Improvement Association on Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Hubbard Lake Lions Park. A bake sale featuring homemade goodies will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. A silent auction with donated items from various crafters, local businesses and individuals will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. A cash prize raffle will take place at 6 p.m. A used equipment sale will run from 3 to 7 p.m. The pork roast dinner will be from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu includes pork roast, red skin potatoes, corn on the cob, coleslaw, applesauce, rolls, and desert. Coffee, iced tea, and juice will be provided. Takeout dinners will also be available. The cost of the dinner is $16 for adults if using a charge card or $15 if paying by cash or check. Dinner is $5 for children under the age of 10.
∫ The Poetics Lab presents Friends, Food, and Free Verse from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10. This open mic event will be hosted by Friendly Foodees, 108 N. 3rd Ave., downtown Alpena. Join the Poetics Lab for their monthly open mic event hosted by Friendly Foodees, one of the newest eateries in our area. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the location, here is your opportunity, and you’ll get to hear some local expressions of art at the same time.

∫ V-J Days continue Sunday in Hillman, with a car show by the Wheels Car Club from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the parking lot on Second Street in downtown Hillman. Trophies will be presented at 3:30 p.m. Food will be provided by the Hillman Senior Center. A Tiger Golf Scramble will take place with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. at Thunder Bay Resort, for $75 per person. Registration begins at 8 a.m. This is a fundraiser for Hillman Athletic Boosters.
