The Northeast Michigan Artists’ Guild invites the community to their annual exhibit at the Besser Museum now through July 24. ∫ The Alpena County Library presents a program in which participants can read to squirrels. Called Paws to Read, the program is offered from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays now through July 30. ∫ Free ROV drop-in sessions are offered this summer from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesday and scheduled for various dates throughout the summer. These sessions will be held in the Maker Space near the large Marine Technology Training Tank at Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. The whole family can pilot their ROV in NOAA’s test tank and learn how these vehicles are used for science and industry. Earn stamps for each mission to track progress and celebrate as you move through the levels. You can attend multiple dates and progress each time. Dates include June 26, July 2, July 11, July 26, Aug. 6, Aug. 10, and Aug. 21.

∫ The ALL Annual Meeting is set for Thursday, June 27 at the Alpena County Library. The event kicks off at 11 a.m. with music by James “Jim” Weeks, M.D., former head of radiology at MyMichigan Medical Center-Alpena. An accomplished musician on a variety of instruments, Weeks will offer a variety of good old songs, a few originals, and some audience participation, too. There will be a short break at 12:15 p.m., with lunch to follow. The Annual Meeting wraps up the day with a recap of ALL’s 2023, a roadmap of a few items in store for 2024, and election of board members. Bring a friend to introduce them to ALL. Mancino’s will provide subs and salad for lunch. A donation would be appreciated. Reservations are required for this event to ensure adequate food for everyone. ∫ The Alpena City Band will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Alpena bandshell located at Bay View Park. Concerts will be held there each Thursday evening through Aug. 13. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and enjoy an hour of music performed by local musicians. There will be no evening concert on July 4, as the band will be participating in the parade earlier that day. Special themed concerts include the July 11 Patriotic Concert, July 25 Children’s Concert, and the Aug. 13 Polka Concert (last concert of the season). A special Veterans Concert will be performed on July 24 inside the tent at the Brown Trout Festival.

∫ The Harrisville Farmers Market, located in the upper parking lot of the Harrisville Harbor at the corner of N. Lake Street and E. ∫ The Craftmakers Cabin will host a free flea market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 29. There is no charge to participate. Bring and sell your own items, and set up south of the historic log cabin located at the corner of U.S.-23 and M-72 in Harrisville. This is a monthly event.
∫ The Homestead Artisan Market and Gallery is in the Kauffman Homestead 8015 E. Grand Lake Road in Grand Lake. The Kauffman Homestead is owned by the Grand Lake Association and is a historical site. They have allowed local crafters and artists to sell their items since the 1970s. An artisan market is like a farmers market, a place giving you an opportunity to meet the creators and learn how and by whom your unique product was made. The Homestead Artisan Market and Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, now through Labor Day, and some special activity days. ∫ Alpena County Library is bubbling over with excitement for Saturday’s bubble party, featuring music, bubbles, bubble games, and more, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This free event is for ages 0 to 6.
∫ Saturday, June 29 is Log Cabin Day at Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan. The annual event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the museum. The historical buildings will be open for tours, and there will be live demonstrations, a dunk tank, food truck, and more. Visitors can enjoy watching demonstrations of weaving, spinning, quilting and blacksmithing. Children will enjoy the petting zoo, butter making, and face painting. The Scouting America Troop 92 and Cub Scouting America Troop 3092 will host activity stations that include rope making, soft ax throwing, and Lego race car building. The fossil park will be open where you can hunt and keep all the Devonian fossils you find. General admission is $5 per adult, $3 per senior age 60 and older, $3 per child ages 5 to 18, free for children under age 5, and free for Besser Museum members. Planetarium shows will be $1 per person. Besser Museum will also be holding their annual Strawberry Sundae Social. Strawberry sundaes will be available for $3 and popcorn for $1. ∫ True North Radio Network presents a free concert from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 29 at the Alpena Bandshell at Bay View Park. Strings Attached will perform soft rock, pop, and dance music. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on, and get ready for some live music and giveaways.
∫ Long Lake Lights Festival will be held Saturday night at the Sandbar and Grill, 9027 W. Long Lake Road, Alpena. Bring your friends and family, and lawn chairs or blankets, and enjoy live music by Alpena’s very own High Speed in concert on the lawn at Sand Bar and Grill on beautiful Long Lake! Music starts at 8 p.m. Food and drinks will be served while you wait for the fireworks to start at dusk. Wolverine Fireworks will be shooting one of their amazing shows from several barges in front of the bar.

∫ The Craftmakers Cabin, at the corner of U.S.-23 and M-72 in Harrisville, will celebrate Log Cabin Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 30. The historic log cabin was built by the Works Progress Administration in 1936-37 and put many local men to work during the Great Depression. Come check out the stone fireplace and curved log staircase, as well as the original log furniture built by the W.P.A. Cupcakes will be served inside the cabin from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Don’t forget to stop by the Old Bailey School log cabin at Sturgeon Point, too!
∫ Child and Family Services of Northeast Michigan is hosting its 3rd Annual Carnival from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 30. There will be games, raffles, food, vendors, prizes, a live performer, and more at this family-friendly event at Shin-ga-ba Shores, Ossineke.
