Besser Museum Log Cabin Day June 29

ALPENA — Saturday, June 29 is Log Cabin Day at Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan. The annual event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the museum.

General admission is $5 per adult, $3 per senior age 60 and older, $3 per child ages 5 to 18, free for children under age 5, and free for Besser Museum members. Planetarium shows will be $1 per person.

The buildings in the Historical Village will be open for tours, including a special wedding exhibit in the Spratt Church. There will be guided tours aboard the 1928 Katherine V commercial fishing tug and the retired DNR Chinook Research Vessel. Visitors will have an opportunity to learn about sturgeons at the Sturgeon for Tomorrow booth and invasive species at the Huron Pines booth.

Visitors can enjoy watching demonstrations of weaving, spinning, quilting and blacksmithing. Children will enjoy the petting zoo, butter making, and face painting. The Scouting America Troop 92 and Cub Scouting America Troop 3092 will host activity stations that include rope making, soft axe throwing, and Lego race car building. The fossil park will be open where you can hunt and keep all the Devonian fossils you find.

The Wolverine Credit Union Dunk Tank will be at Log Cabin Day this year. This dunk-tank fundraiser is made possible, thanks to the following community volunteers. Dunk Brad Somers, director of the Boys and Girls Club, from noon to 1 p.m.; dunk Griffin James, owner of Cedar and Threads, from 1 to 2 p.m.; dunk Andy Marceau, Alpena City Fire Department from 2 to 3 p.m. Dunks are $1 a throw or six throws for $5.

All proceeds will go to support the new “Discover Northeast Michigan History” exhibit.

Visitors can purchase a snack from Liv’s Food Shack.

Besser Museum will also be holding their annual Strawberry Sundae Social. Strawberry sundaes will be available for $3 and popcorn for $1.
