Today is Older Michiganians Day during Senior Action Week

LANSING — This week is Senior Action Week in Michigan, highlighted by Older Michiganians Day today.

Senior Action Week is sponsored by the Area Agencies on Aging Association and takes place during Older Americans Month in May. It focuses on public policy issues of importance to older adults, their families, and caregivers, including more than 1,500 service providers that directly deliver an array of supports and services annually to more than 250,000 seniors and persons with disabilities.

Senior Action Week’s theme this year is “Powering 50 Years of Connection.”

Area Agencies on Aging know the vital role older adults play in our state and individual communities — as family members, friends, mentors, volunteers, civic leaders, members of the workforce, and more — and their experience, knowledge, and passion truly know no bounds.

The Aging Network has prioritized four platform issues for 2024: Support and Strengthen the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, Support Family and Informal Caregivers, Expand Access to MI Choice, and Increase Access to Home and Community-Based Services.

“OMD is a time to be advocates for the priorities most important to older adults and persons with disabilities,” said David LaLumia, executive director of Area Agencies on Aging Association of Michigan. “We welcome members of the Legislature who will be joining us as speakers and as visitors to the State capitol for this most important event. Thanks to OMD sponsors and others who made this day possible.”

Individuals interested in participating in advocacy efforts, including social media messages, a letter writing campaign, and a rally and livestreamed event at the Capitol on May 1 should contact their local Area Agency on Aging. A directory of agencies can be found at www.4ami.org.
