Alpha Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma presents awards

ALPENA ­– The March meeting of Alpha Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an organization of women educators, met at JJ’s Restaurant to enjoy a pizza dinner, present two annual awards, and conduct a business meeting.

The first award, the Friend of Education Award, given to honor an individual or organization in our community for their support of the education of our area youth, was given to the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena. Executive Director Brad Somers and his staff were present to accept the award. They shared with the group the many services they provide at the club, including providing a free meal at 4 p.m. on weekdays, assistance with homework, providing activities after school and on half-days, and offer many exciting summer programs. The Youth Volunteer Corps at the high school is also part of the program. Together, the two locations have a daily attendance of about 145 youth.

Julie Kowalski received the Woman of Distinction Award for her dedicated service to Alpha Xi. She has served as president and co-president, volunteers to serve on committees at the state and local levels, has attended many of the state conventions, and is always willing to serve with a smile. She is a valued member of the organization.

During the business meeting, the members voted to increase their support of the Myrna Kelly Scholarship from $500 to $1,000 for the next two years. This scholarship is available through the Alpena Community College Foundation.

This organization also offers a future educator scholarship to a college students planning to enter the field of education. Information about this scholarship is available by contacting Pauline Buchner at 989-340-0391. The deadline for submitting applications is April 11.

The next meeting of the Alpha Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma will be held the evening of Thursday, April 18 at the First United Methodist Church. At this meeting, Alpha Xi will have their annual auction to raise money for their many endeavors.
