AHS Leadership partnering with senior center for Game Night

ALPENA — Teens are teaming up with the Alpena Senior Citizens Center to plan a Senior Game Night.

The event will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 24 at the senior center, 501 River St., Alpena. There is a $10 entry fee, as this is also a fundraiser for the senior center.

“It’s specifically toward our meal programs,” said Annie Hepburn, director of the Alpena Senior Citizens Center.

The Alpena High School Leadership Class has about 30 students who help organize events, both for the school and in the community.

“We basically do stuff with the community, like making card nights for seniors, we run all the dances, so Homecoming, Winterfest, Prom, we do assemblies, so pep rallies, we do a parade for Homecoming,” Keira Paad said. “We just cover all events, basically.”

They also head up charitable programs.

“We do food baskets in the community, too,” added Laura Poli. “So, this year, we’ve reached out for donations, and we’ve had various successful results.”

They also participate in the Giving Tree for those in need at Christmastime.

“Right now, we’re planning for Prom, which is May 11th,” Paad said. “And also doing the senior game night, which is May 24th.”

The game night will feature card games, including euchre, and a variety of board games.

“We’re going to be having board games of any sort, and you can bring your own games, too,” Poli said. “So, if you have a specific game, or a new game that you bought, you can bring it, and find some friends.”

“We’re going to have different tables with different games, and snacks, and just a fun night,” said Audrey Brownridge.

“I think the neat thing about the leadership class partnering with us and the seniors is just that collaboration with students and seniors, learning from each other,” Hepburn said. “And just for that increased socialization, which we know is important for our seniors.”

This isn’t the first time the senior center has offered game night, but it is the first time they have partnered with AHS students to bring it to the community.

“We’ve done game night many, many years ago, but I think it’s exciting that the leadership class reached out to us to do the program, and I’m hopeful that many seniors come,” Hepburn said. “I think it will be a fun evening.”

There will also be a 50/50 drawing.

Paad explained the significance of partnering with the senior center, as a high school class.

“I think it’s important because of the different generations meeting together,” she said. “We obviously have our grandparents and parents that we talk to, but we also want to get out into the community and tell everyone what leadership does as a class, because we do a lot of stuff, like giving back to the community, and we want to broaden our outreach to everyone.”

Paad, Poli, and Brownridge are sophomores in the AHS Leadership Class.

If you have questions about the game night, call the senior center at 989-356-3585. If you plan to attend the game night, please RSVP by Friday, May 10.
