ALPENA -- The Alpha Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of women educators, met on Jan. 23 at the First Presbyterian Church for dinner and a meeting.

Julie Usher introduced the guest for the evening, Mary Schalk, representing Partners in Prevention. This nonprofit organization covers a four-county area including Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle. The group learned that Partners in Prevention helps our community raise children who are safe, loved, and resilient and helps adults increase knowledge and skills to address life's challenges.

Upcoming educational offerings in the coming months include a six-week class, Caring for Children Who Have Experienced Trauma, Feb. 1 through March 7. This class is for parents, caregivers and anyone who works with children and families. A two-day workshop on Feb. 20 and 21 will focus on suicide prevention. Beginning April 8 through May 6, a weekly session will help individuals who have experienced trauma in their developmental years care for themselves. Another opportunity to aid someone at risk of suicide will be offered the morning of March 2 at the Hillman Senior Center. For more information on these programs, contact Partners in Prevention at 989-356-2880 or programs@nemcpi.org.

Midge Connon spoke about the Delta Kappa Gamma Myrna Kelly Scholarship Fund, available through the Alpena Community College Foundation. Myrna Kelly, a deceased former member of Alpha Xi, left money to establish a scholarship for a college student pursuing a degree in education. DKG members continue to contribute to this fund to support future educators.

The next meeting of Alpha Xi will be held on Tuesday, March 12.
