AARP tax aide available

ALPENA -- AARP tax aide assistance is being offered at two area locations this year, by appointment.

St. Paul Lutheran Church, located at 727 S. 2nd Ave., Alpena, will take appointments on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Green Township Hall, at the corner of M-32 and M-65 (14621 M-32 West, Lachine), will take appointments on Thursdays and Saturdays.

To schedule an appointment at either location, call 989-278-8104.

This year, there is no Lincoln site offered, but there are also sites in Hale, Oscoda, and East Tawas.

The Internal Revenue Service and American Association of Retired Persons Foundation jointly sponsor the tax aide program, which is geared to help seniors over age 50 and those with limited income. All volunteer counselors receive training each year and have to pass a test to verify they have an understanding of the tax material. Individuals in need of business tax or similar advanced special program assistance are referred to paid preparers.

The volunteers will help fill out basic state and federal tax forms for senior citizens as well as people with low or limited incomes. Electronic filing service will be done at no cost to the taxpayer.
