ALPENA -- The Salvation Army of Alpena County made a call for help to give, so love could go beyond the holidays and into 2024, and the community answered.
In a year of increased requests for services and a struggling economy, the Salvation Army was not sure if the community would be able to step up to the increased goal. But they did, in record time.
The Salvation Army was able to meet its goal and provide help to many in need. That is because of partners, donors, and tireless volunteers who stepped up despite the struggles of 2023. This is the first time in over five years that the Army's goal was reached before January. As of Thursday, Dec. 28, the Army had raised $168,498.84, surpassing its $165,000 goal.
A big help was Honorary Red Kettle Chairperson Margie Haaxma of Banner Realty. She was the spokesperson and promoter of the programs and goal of the Salvation Army. She provided promotions and billboards to assist in getting the word out. The $165,000 goal was reached because of her help. These funds will assist in helping the needs of our Alpena County neighbors in 2024.
The Salvation Army would not be able to serve those in need in this county without the help of its generous partners, donors, and bellringers.
"The Army thanks you all for giving from your heart during these difficult times," said Major Prezza Morrison. "You showed love to those who feel unloved. You gave hope to those who feel hopeless. The Salvation Army is not the Salvation Army without you."
The number of families, children and seniors served this holiday season will be shared when all information is collected and finalized.
As 2024 begins, The Salvation Army doors are still open weekly from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Salvation Army assists with utility bills, food and personal care items, clothing and household voucher, disaster services, youth and adult programs, spiritual assistance, and more.
Call 989-358-2769 for information concerning available programs. All funds collected after December will also be used to serve the high level of requests expected again this year.
