Hope Shores Alliance hosting candlelight vigils for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

ALPENA — Hope Shores Alliance is honoring Domestic Violence Awareness Month this year across the five-county service area as part of the Everyday Advocates: Believe. Support. Validate. campaign. HSA has partnered with libraries and prosecutors’ offices in each of the service counties — Alcona, Alpena, Iosco, Montmorency and Presque Isle — to co-host Remember My Name: A candlelight vigil honoring victims and celebrating survivors of domestic violence.

“Hope Shoes Alliance is holding space for the community to come together not only to support each other, but the ones who lost their lives to domestic violence,” said HSA Residential Advocate Kimberly Brandt. “As a community we need to come together for that because it isn’t supported enough.”

Remember My Name is a nationwide project that began in 1994 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in partnership with Ms. Magazine to create a registry of names in an effort to increase awareness of deaths caused by domestic violence. Each year the project is open for individuals to submit the names of people of all genders and ages whose lives have been taken by domestic violence.

Candlelight vigils are free and open to all community members to gather in support of survivors at the following locations and dates:

¯ Montmorency County: Briley Township Park, Atlanta — 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

¯ Alcona County: Harrisville Library — 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12.

¯ Iosco County: Oscoda Township Library — 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

¯ Alpena County: Alpena County Library — 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

¯ Presque Isle County: Presque Isle County Courthouse — 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, hosted by the Women’s Civic League of Presque Isle.

In addition to the candlelight vigils, HSA has partnered with True North Threads — A Family Enterprise in bringing back the Everyday Advocates: Believe. Support. Validate. T-shirt campaign. Long and short sleeve options are available to purchase via the True North Threads online shop through Monday, Oct. 16. Further details regarding shipping and pick-up options are available along with ordering at hope-shores-alliance-1010222.square.site.

In addition to the above events, the community is invited to join the 10th Annual HSA Bowling Event at Thunder Bowl Lanes, Alpena from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20 for an evening of excitement, prizes, bonding and support of survivors.

The public is invited to participate in the T-shirt campaign, candlelight vigils, and the HSA Annual Bowling Event. Proceeds of the campaign and bowling event will benefit survivors receiving services through Hope Shores Alliance and the candlelight vigils are open to the community at no cost.
