Alcona County Library sets October events

HARRISVILLE ­– Alcona County Library has announced October programs. If you have any questions, call the library at 989-724-6796.

Every Tuesday in October, practice ukulele at 10 a.m. at the Harrisville branch, with ukuleles available for checkout, and players of all skill levels invited to join.

On Tuesdays, Oct. 3 and 17, Knitting Klub and Crochet meets at 1:15 p.m. All ages and skill levels are welcome to join.

On Wednesday, Oct. 4, Friends of the Alcona County Library will meet at 1 p.m. at the Harrisville branch.

Every Thursday in October, the walking club meets at 9 a.m. at the Harrisville branch.

On Friday, Oct. 6, a Hula Hoop Beach Party will be at 11 a.m. outside, weather permitting, and will be held in lieu of Storytime and Craft.

Saturday, Oct. 7 will be Mini Paranormal-Con for paranormal and UFO enthusiasts. The Harrisville branch will host paranormal and UFO researchers Deb and Arjay DeRousse, the Cherry Capital Shadow Seekers, and the Michigan Area Paranormal Investigative Team (M.A.P.I.T.) from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Come explore the world of ghost hunting and paranormal investigation with demonstrations and discussions at this free event.

On Monday, Oct. 9, spin away the afternoon learning about wool carding, spinning, and fiber arts in Spinning with Teresa at 1:30 p.m. All supplies as well as spinning wheels and drop spindles will be provided. This is a free event, but space is limited. Call 989-724-6796 to sign up.

On Monday, Oct. 9, Cookbook Club meets at 5 p.m. at the Harrisville branch. Pick up this month’s cookbook, “Tastes and Tales along the Tunnel of Trees”, a beautiful collaborative cookbook with original Michigander recipes, and choose a recipe to make and share with the group.

On Thursday, Oct. 12, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this month the Alcona County Library partners with Hope Shores Alliance to host a candlelight vigil held in honor of survivors of Domestic Violence from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 12 through Saturday, Oct. 14, Friends of the Library present the Fall Book Sale, with over 1,000 books to choose from. Support the Friends of the Library and find some good reads. The book sale will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

On Fridays, Oct. 13, 20 and 27, children and parents are invited to Storytime and Craft at 10:30 a.m. Each week, Children’s specialist, Miss Shay, will read a fun and engaging story, followed by a craft related to the story that kids can take home and enjoy.

On Tuesday, Oct. 17, the Alcona Library Book Club will meet at noon at the Harrisville branch. Pick up a copy of Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” and discuss the main themes and plot points of this novel with the group over pastries and coffee.

On Wednesday, Oct. 25, the Alcona County Library Board will meet at 2 p.m. at the Caledonia branch.

On Monday, Oct. 30, meet at the Harrisville branch at 1 p.m. for a Kokedama craft. Kokedamas are beautiful, living decor made with moss and plants. There is a $3 fee for supplies for this craft, with limited space available. Call 989-724-6796 to reserve your spot.

On Tuesday, Oct. 31, Happy Halloween! Trick-or-treat at the library! Stop by the Harrisville branch from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. in your favorite costume and pick up a sweet treat at the circulation desk.
