SUNRISE SIDE BULLETIN BOARD
LWV Lunch Bunch Friday
ALPENA — The Northeast Michigan League of Women Voters will hold the August Lunch Bunch at noon on Friday at Parker House on US 23 North in Presque Isle.
The event will include an update on State LWV Convention. August is Back to School month, so the featured film discussion will be “The Education of Shelby Knox.”
The award-winning 2005 documentary film tells the coming-of-age story of Shelby Knox, a teenager who joins a campaign for comprehensive sex education in the high schools of Lubbock, Texas. Knox finds that Lubbock has some of the highest teen pregnancy and STD rates in the nation. She struggles to reconcile her newfound belief in a comprehensive sex-education curriculum with her deeply religious Southern Baptist upbringing.
The movie was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival in 2005 and aired on the PBS P.O.V. series that same year. It was directed and produced by Marion Lipschutz and Rose Rosenblatt.
Please join League members and friends for good food, friendship, and discussion of this “exceptionally timely and intimate look at the cultural wars from the perspective of a young woman’s life. The support her conservative family provides is an example of how a healthy democracy could look given the time and will to listen.”
