ALPENA The Alpha Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of women educators, met at the 19th Hole on May 18 to celebrate its 66th Birthday.

After a social time and dinner, it was announced that Mackenzie Linton is the 2023 Grant-in-Aide recipient, a $1,000 annual award, to help further her goal of becoming an educator. Since Mackenzie and her parents were unable to attend our meeting, Pauline Buchner met with Mackenzie and her mother, Andrea Linton, to present her with her award. Mackenzie is a student at Grand Valley University.

Since the society had two other outstanding candidates who applied for the Grant-in-Aide and had the available funding, members present voted to give a $500 award to two other young women who are pursuing a degree in education. Allison Poli and Addison Marceau have received the money to help with college costs. Allison is a student at Central Michigan University and Addison graduated with an associate's degree from Alpena Community College and will be attending Grand Valley State University in the fall.

The group welcomed a new member and a returning member during this meeting. Katie Thomson, currently a teacher at Lincoln School, became a member of Alpha Xi. Melissa Schaedig was reinstated as a member.

Julie Usher, chair of the Literacy Committee, announced that the group has again received a grant from the Gerber Foundation allowing them to purchase a book to send home with each newborn at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena. The book has nursery rhymes and ideas for parents to help them prepare their child for learning to read and develop the love of reading.

Each year at its May meeting, the chapter honors members who continue to serve the organization. Pins are awarded signifying their years of membership. Members present to receive their pins were Sylvia Dartt for her 30 years of membership, Julie Kowalski for her 25 years as a member and Holly Scott was presented with her five-year pin.

On Aug. 3, the group will have a picnic at the St. Paul Campground. The potluck will begin at 11 a.m.

Starting at /week.
