Today at 10 a.m., ALL presents the New Deal Tour of Presque Isle at M. Briggs Center and via Zoom.
During the Great Depression, Presque Isle County became a laboratory for Roosevelt's New Deal programs, especially the Civilian Conservation Corps.Learn where to find more than a dozen active New Deal sites and visit an original CCC camp during this historical and architectural tour.
Dr. Mary Ann Heidemann retired as Associate Professor of Architecture and Director of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She is a Michigan registered Professional Community Planner and fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners.
Mexican Train Express dominoes is held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays at M. Briggs Center. Ready for a fun, addictive and fast-moving game that has lots of surprising twists and turns? Join ALL for Mexican Train Express. This dominoes game does not have partners and can be played with two, three, four, five or more players. Learn some tricks and techniques. You may join this class any time during the year.
ALL presents Africa Cruise -- "Visit" both Durban and Cape Town, South Africa, Walvis Bay, Namibia, and Takoradi, Ghana at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at M. Briggs Center.
Travel vicariously -- learn about Africa. Join ALL for a continuation of travel experiences from a 74-day cruise circumnavigating Africa. This talk will expand on the introduction to long duration cruising by "visiting" ports in the country of South Africa (both Durban and Cape Town); Walvis Bay, Namibia; and Takoradi, Ghana. This will be a great way to experience cruise travel.
Rocky and Ginny Roland are active ALL members and inveterate travelers. In the last 15 years they have taken over 10 cruises, many to somewhat exotic locations with four or five cruises longer than 30 days each. In 2018, they ventured out on one of their most adventurous tours -- a 39-day land tour (backpacking style) that hit most of the Balkan nations. Rocky and Ginny often share their travel experiences with ALL, and their most recent adventure -- a 74-day cruise circumnavigating Africa -- will supply fodder for several ALL presentations.
Pinochle is from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays at M. Briggs Center, with Julie Byrnes and others from ALL.
A new square dancing class has begun on Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. at M. Briggs Center. Come work on your square dance calls. This is an ad hoc event for the purpose of improving your Mainstream and Plus calls. There will be no caller, but experienced dancers will be there to help and fill in a square or half square. The intent is to repeat calls, so the muscle memory is there when you attend a dance.
ALL will hear about Michigan's Headwaters Land Conservancy at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at M. Briggs Center.
Julie Rubsam, executive director of Headwaters Land Conservancy, will share information about their overarching conservation efforts which will include a deeper dive into conservation easements. She will cover what a conservation easement is, how they are created, what it means for landowners, and how they benefit our Michigan landscape and communities.
Rubsam is a native of Indiana and grew up loving the outdoors. She studied at Perdue University beginning in Botany and Plant Pathology, then Horticulture, then Forestry -- an academic pathway leading to her broad expertise in most things out of doors!
On Fridays from 12:30 to 3 p.m., Contract Bridge is held at M. Briggs Center. This is an ongoing group of varied players who welcome any players at any time. This is a teaching class but experienced players are welcome to join as well.
Square dancing is from 4 to 6 p.m. on Fridays at M. Briggs Center. Square dancing is great exercise for the body and the brain! Come brush up on your Mainstream and Plus dancing. Fabulous caller Dave Boggs, of Desert Aire, Washington, will be reviewing Mainstream calls and teaching and reviewing Plus calls. No partner, no problems -- Singles are very welcome! Those who want to start beginning lessons can find beginning lessons for the summer being taught in Presque Isle. These lessons are not an ALL-sponsored event.
