Wesner earns NWTF scholarship

POSEN -- On March 4, Presque Isle Turkey Trackers chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) held their annual Hunting Heritage and Scholarship banquet.
This banquet is a fundraising event to help our chapter with its outreach to the community, which includes low cost seed for food plots, helping with hunter safety programs, providing turkeys to the needy during the holidays, providing scholarships to area high school seniors and many other programs.
In the fall of 2022, area high school seniors were asked to submit a scholarship application. The applicants are judged on scholastic achievements, leadership abilities in the school and community, plus each applicant is asked to provide three letters of recommendation and write an essay on why hunting is important to them and their commitment to conservation.
The Presque Isle Turkey Trackers Board reviews and judges each application and chooses a winner (or winners). With financial support from LaFarge Presque Isle Quarry, a $1,000 scholarship was presented to Ava Wesner, a Posen High School senior.
Winners from the local NWTF Chapters are eligible for the Michigan State Chapter Scholarship award. Wesner's application has been forwarded to the State Chapter, and she is eligible for a $2,500, scholarship. If Wesner wins the State Chapter Scholarship, her application will then be submitted to the National Scholarship committee for review and a chance to win a $10,000 scholarship funded by Mossy Oak.
There are 56 NWTF Chapters in the state of Michigan, and in the past 20 years, there have been three winners from Posen. Presque Isle Turkey Trackers would like to recognize the Posen school system for their great teaching and leadership. To have three winners come from a small school system shows the dedication of the teachers, administration, and the community as a whole. The three winners are Kari Ataman (2013), Lyndsey Romel (2016), and Lizzy Romel (2022).
